Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 12:33 PM by liberalitch
I am writing another horror story..... if you were going to pick one tarot card (or lay out of cards) to represent betrayal.... which one would it be?

3. 10 of Swords
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 12:38 PM by JoDog
In the traditional Rider-Waite deck, the image on that card is a dead man, lying face down with 10 swords in his back. ie--stabbed in the back.

Paranormality.com lists its meaning thusly:

Divinatory meaning
Upright - Ruin, desolation, disruption, although generally this refers to a group rather than an individual. Sorrow, sudden misfortune, accidents, muggings or personal robbery. There is some cause for optimism; as the lowest point in the cycle, from now on things can only get better the worst is over.

Ill Dignified or Reversed - Only an illusionary lifting of burdens or release from afflictions as suffering will continue. Sometimes death and violent and extreme change. Only temporary good fortune.

For a lover's betrayal, go for the 3 of swords--3 blades in a heart

Divinatory meaning
Upright - Sorrow and extreme pain. With a positive view in end: upheaval, separation, disruption and discord. Heartbreak, tears, strife, conflict. The clearing of that which is obsolete to make way for that to come. Establishment of something better.

Ill Dignified or Reversed - Spiritual and mental confusion, loss, discord, treachery and sorrow. War, breaking of a truce, quarrels and enmity. Physical or mental disorder.

8. If a love affair-type betrayal,
Edited on Fri Nov-21-08 04:03 PM by in search of sanity
then three of swords. Take a look at the card - it's a heart with three swords through it. It shows real heart ache.
Let me know if it's a different kind of betrayal you're concerned about.

9. I wouldn't use the tower.
It represents self destruction, I think the hanging man is better.

11. For betrayal, I'd say it's whichever card you picked from the huckster who charged for a 'reading.'
More specifically, I'd say... Oh, I don't know. How about "Second Unit Director?"

And what exactly did he do with his first unit?

12. The Tower
http://www.toniallen.co.uk/thetowertarotcard.html

For many people the break up of a long term relationship results in The Tower. One’s identity has been built on being that person’s partner, on the shared friendships, the shared dreams and the shared income. With the loss of the relationship comes the loss of everything else.

14. Why I don't think the tower card can be represented by betrayal
I always thought that the Tower card represented calamity due to hubris.

15. The Tower refers to destruction of current structures
It is far more than just betrayal. If the betrayal means the end of a marriage, sale of a home, and other possible results, perhaps it could apply but the emphasis is on the destruction, not the betrayal.
The destruction of the Tower is supposed to lead to the building of a new life, with new structures. Getting rid of the old in order to let the new in. If that is not what you are trying to get at in your story, don't use the Tower.
