My Pyrex roasting pan exploded!
:wtf:

I had the thing at least 15 years. Never had a problem. I was cooking a roast beef this afternoon, opened the door to baste it and BOOM! Glass and gravy all over the oven and the kitchen floor. :-(

It just took me two and a half hours to clean everything and make sure the kitchen floor was free of those tiny slivers of glass that can hurt a puppy. Luckily, he was in the other room when the explosion occurred and I was able to put the baby gate up immediately ... so the puppy paws are safe. :-)

Now I have no dinner, no Pyrex pan (which I use all the time) and my day was wasted on cleaning the kitchen and the oven, which I had just cleaned a week ago! I'm pissed!

1. You're making me nervous.
I plan to slow-cook a pork roast next Wednesday, and I had planned to use my Pyrex baking dish.

Now I'm not so sure. Maybe I should go with the enameled pan...

Sounds like the only things that got hurt in your kitchen were the dish and tonight's menu. At least that's good news.

5. I'm so glad my puppy wasn't in the kitchen.
He usually comes running when he hears the oven door open, but he was busy with a new toy. It could have been so much worse ... I could have had glass-covered schnoodle! :-(

I'm was going to use my Pyrex pie plate for Thanksgiving. I think I'm going to buy a metal one instead.

2. Temperature differential. It'll happen sometimes.
My brother got a huge gash on his leg when he was little because he was in the room when someone set a hot piece of pyrex onto a cold counter and it went kaboom.

16. Pyrex/glass/ceramic is good for a lot of things
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 04:09 PM by DarkTirade
I try to use nothing but glass in my brewing because plastic can leave weird aftertastes. But for the really high-temp stuff you want coated metal. :)

I do like to use it for things like casseroles that you just put in the oven at 300-400 degrees and leave 'em for a while though.

11. I did that about 10 years ago.
I learned the hard way that cold counters and hot Pyrex do not mix.

26. Pyrex isn't supposed to do that.

That's why most chemistry glassware is made from it. Something strange happened here. I think it was more than thermal contraction.

27. No, it can happen quite easily with Pyrex
Read the link somebody supplied in another post.

I just wonder why I never saw anything like that in the years I worked as a chemlab tech.

3. Apparently this happens a lot
A LOT a lot: http://www.consumeraffairs.com/homeowners/pyrex.html
I think maybe I'll stop microwaving water in the Pyrex measuring cup.

Sorry it happened to you; glad neither you nor the puppy was hurt.

18. No kidding.
I'm thinking now that the best use for my Pyrex is as a container for marinating. Yeesh.

13. ACK! That's frightening. I've had one crack a long time ago
it just split in two and didn't shatter. I've always loved using glass bakeware. Now after reading how many people have had them explode, I'm not so sure I'll ever feel safe using those bakeware dishes again.

14. Thank you for the link.
Time to replace all of my Pyrex (used to love it) with enamelware. Damn, but thankfully no injuries yet. I am sending the link to other people too.

4. Is it really cold / drafty in your kitchen?
I wonder what could have caused that. Scary.

I don't know what the hell happened.

12. I've had that happen, too, and it IS scary.
Glad you weren't hurt, and I can sympathize RE the cleanup and wasted meal. I still love my Pyrex, but I'm a lot more careful to watch for temp differentials now while handling it.

15. You are the SECOND person who has told me this today!
And, when Pyrex breaks, it explodes into a zillion little tempered pieces. You can Shop-Vac your oven out -- it's the easiest way, imo.

17. That happened to me when I was basting a roast.
I've been very very careful of not touching the pan after I put them in the oven until it's done. If I have to open it, I just slide the rack out. I would much rather that than have glass everywhere.

Glad you and puppy are safe. That can be a shocking experience to say the least.

19. I had it happen too, with a big piece of salmon I'd cooked at 400 degrees
It was an older Pyrex baking dish - took it out of the oven and it fell apart in my SO's hands - just as you describe. LUCKILY, the salmon (which was locally caught and expensive) was completely wrapped in foil and survived intact.

20. That happened to me as well...
Edited on Wed Nov-19-08 04:31 PM by CraftyGal
It was a wedding gift, which shattered pretty much like my first marriage. I had baked a wonderful casserole, then has I was pulling it out of the oven, the whole thing shattered on me. It was not a very pretty sight. My ex could hear my screams as everything fell on my feet and I had no slippers on. It was summer and hot both in and outside. I am very luck to not have scars, however I will never use a glass baking dish ever again. The dish was Anchor Hocking, not Pyrex. There have been numerous complaints. 21. Same thing happened to my daughter
Only hers exploded when she put it in the sink after she took the food she cooked out of the pan.

BAAAAAAAAM!!!! She said it scared her half to death. I'm just glad she wasn't standing right over it when it exploded!

23. I love Pyrex pans myself...
My man learned that the glass shelves in refrigerators don't like temperature changes.... he put a hot pan of soup in the fridge and it shattered the shelf.

I've also seen Pyrex coffee pots explode, and both times it was when some guy at work decided to dump out the hot coffee and then immediately rinse the hot glass in cold water.

But I'd never seen one explode in the oven or from opening the oven door. That does sound creepy!

I do have to say my favorite way to cook is a crock pot. And my roasting pans are usually metal. It's my baking dishes that are Pyrex, my pie pans and casserole/cake pans.

24. Wow
I thought this only happened to the crappy Anchor Hocking imitations. I've had those explode on me just by opening the oven door to put them in.

I was sad when I got a glass-top range and had to retire my Visions cookware (not perfectly flat on the bottom, so won't work with ceramic), but now I'm thinking that might not have been such a bad thing.

25. Apparently it happens with genuine Pyrex, too.
I know you have to be careful when putting it on a counter or in the sink, but I thought it was safe while in the oven. :-(

28. If the glass dish was as old as you say...
perhaps there was a minute crack in it, invisible to the eye,
but that crack could get steam, liquid, or a temperature difference,
and set off the whole shebang.

I won't cook with anything that has a discernable difference,
a crack or a bubble. And if you don't know, better use it as a planter,
or napkin holder...

We take a lot for granted but shit happens.

30. That's what I was thinking.
It's the only thing that makes sense because I've used Pyrex for years and never had a dish crack in the oven before - even at high temperatures.
