Why is everyone so excited over the new Star Trek movie?

Did they name it 'The One That Doesn't Suck' or something?

21. Wow! Sulu Rocks! :)
...always amazes me that Star Trek was so "before-their-time" about having racial diversity on TV.

Nice pic of Sulu/Uhuru! :)

29. From "The Naked Time" (1966)...
Back when supporting characters had some dialogue and background.

Sulu liked botany and fencing; the latter you see here.

When "The Naked Now" was made in 1987 for the Next (and amazingly not last) Generation, the producers ditched the original story's intent of fleshing out characters' feelings, personal demons, motivations, et cetera, and instead relying on everyone engaging in drunken sexuality to keep the 45 minutes going. Which only goes to show why season 1 of TNG will never be fondly remembered...

"The Naked Time" is one of my favorites.

Of course, show it to anyone under 25 and they'll laugh it off as looking cheap, its "slow" pacing*, or make some snide comments about the people within; forgetting the time it was made and WHY stories were made. And the REAL risks that were taken.

Today's TV, HDTV, should be called ADHDTV as far as I'm concerned...

:wow:

I dig botany too, though I thought nothing of it then - or now for that matter.

Botany is a form of science; though what compelled Sulu to become a navigator was never explained...

45. No no no no no! The sucky ones are 1, 5, 8, 10 and sometimes 4 and 7.
Sorry, but "First Contact" is so much pedantic fanwank that while they're having their party, they're not inviting anyone else in.

Which is okay for those who are really into the franchise, but "Generations" and "Insurrection" had a more intellectual feel. Neither was perfect either and, let's face it, "Insurrection" was preachy and had a cornball of a copout ending, but they tried to do and be more than "the borg are coming! big space ships! assimilation! plot holes galore!! cameos from half the cast of Voyager! time travel to an era nobody give a rat's keyster about!"

I'd rather pretend "Nemesis" was never made... just bad. Very bad. John Logan bad... wait, he made the bloody thing so it can't be John Logan John Logan bad... can't it?

11 times plus a brazilliion bad TV knock-off series...

I think, all other things being equal that Roddenberry should have simply stopped in the 60's. Everything after that were nothing more than prime time soap operas set on space ships with ray guns to satisfy the fan-boys.

Heck, even the cheesy cartoon was better than what came after it...

18. I don't think it's that the odd ones sucked... I think it's that the even numbered ones were good
and the rest sucked.

The reason for doing it backwards like that? Because the Next Gen ones mostly sucked. And that's when they stopped numbering them. :P

Hell, Natalie Portman is a good actress, but look at her performance in the Star Wars prequels.

33. Given the state of modern media...
Only geeks would be turned off.

Today's media does tongue-in-cheek campness, simplistic plots that can't follow their own logic, uber-emo content because emotions sell, and a whip-zip amphetamine-addict "pace" to help make up for the lack of thinking that would otherwise be required.

Older television may not look as posh, but it's got the substance today's toddler fodder lacks and so desperately needs.
