I just listened to a bunch of contemporary country music.
Based on my sampling, country music hasn't had an original idea, musically or lyrically, in 30 years.

That's all I have to say on the matter. :puke:

17. I know!
I grew up hearing that stuff, 'cuz my dad was in the biz. Even as a young child, I remember thinking: "God this music sucks" (or the equivalent of that phrase in the 70s).

The other thing is, usually if you see a "KUPL" bumpersticker on a vehicle, they also have some other bad sticker on it like "Bush/Cheney" (well, they did a couple years ago before even they got embarrassed by that).

2. Used to be much of what I listened to
I still like a lot of it, but haven't kept up with the scene like I used to. I concentrate on a few new artists like Taylor Swift, Brad Paisley, Little Big Town, and Sugarland plus mainstays like Martina, Alan, Patty, and Garth.

3. Cash is cool and a lil bit of Willie is about all I can stand.
I do like looking at female country music singers. Dems some purty ladies. Shania Twain is great to watch with the mute button on.

I'd squeal like a pig for her.

5. Contemporary Country is little more than bad pop music with a twang, in my opinion.
There is the occasional decent song or artist, but most of it is not to my taste.

Of course, if you like it, enjoy - I'm sure something I like sucks to you.

6. If you have Sirius radio..
give Outlaw Country ch.63 a try.
They play Hank 3, Jayhawks, BoDeans, and older stuff like George, Hank 1, and Buck Owens.

7. The last innovation was when Garth Brooks taught them to copy the Eagles

8. I disagree that it's a copy
Edited on Mon Nov-17-08 08:13 PM by mvd
I just don't hear it that way. I hear elements of the Eagles, though. It's not the most experimental music, but I don't mind if music isn't. I just have to like it. The biggest problem was that the sound was repeated so much that I didn't find I needed to buy in the genre as much. Also, conservative politics got too prevalent.

11. Hey - The Eagles were a fine band
And Garth Brooks (whom I actually like) made a point to show how influenced he was by the Eagles.

But then contemporary country took that as a blueprint and ran with it.

12. Definite influence - I just didn't agree with the word "copy"
Glad you like the Eagles.. I feel lonely here on that one. :hi:

13. I 'like' the Eagles
Even though I follow the Dude...I think the Eagles made good music. Perfect pop. The UB40 or Huey Lewis of their time.

And I even like Garth Brooks, but you have to admit his music was full of The Eagles. It was as if he was an Eagles Cover band.

And after that, because Eagles + Country works, the rest is history.

14. I still don't hear the cover band part
There's tradition mixed with the Eagles + some pop. Sometimes George Strait is just as revered. Country has been getting more and more pop over time, it seems.

15. Then move to the UK.
American Country music is relegated to 1 AM station in London, and nationwide to a 2-3 hour show on Sundays on Radio 2, and maybe the odd track in the daily playlist. That's your lot.

Scottish country music gets more airplay... when at university in Dundee, I had a radio that could only get FM, and I had Radios 1,2,3,4 and Radio Tay. That was my lot... and weekend evenings Radio Tay would switch to Scottish country music.

Though nowadays things may be frightening in the world of Scottish country music: Jimmy Shand vs 50 Cent. Eeek!

Mark.

16. hmm....
I haven't listened to any contemporary pop music in years, but I remember a few (5 - 10) years ago thinking that the new country music was a lot better than the new rock music. That was odd for me, since I'd hated country music as a kid and really liked rock music. Once I started doing a lot of cross country driving, I would listen to the radio, and the country stations were better than the rock stations.

What I really like, that I've only seemed to find in the south and south west are the country oldies stations. Good stuff, that.
