2. It's really, really not fair...
Aretha can sing like nobody's business, so I should vote for her. But Gwen is very attractive. Guess I'll go with the talent part.

3. "Can't you hear what the New Breed is sayin'?"
No Doubt is a great band though-and Gwen also has an emotive voice.

I voted for Aretha though. lol.

has to offer. She is in a class by herself.

For the uninitiated, check out, "I've never loved a man."
That's the one that starts: You're no good--Heartbreaker! You're a liar and a cheat! I don't know why, I let you do these things to me. Friends keep tellin' me. That you ain't no good. But Oh oh, they don't know-- I'd leave you -- if I could.

14. Actually, she kind of is.

For years, I've said that if Aretha hadn't come along, Etta James might very well have become the Queen of Soul. There's not a whole lot of soul music as good as (let alone better than) Etta's 1960s recordings for the Chess label.

For a perfect (and inexpensive) example of Etta James at her best, grab a CD copy of her 1968 album, TELL MAMA. It kicks ass from beginning to end!

15. I'm very into the blues
as well as soul and r&b.
Bessie Smith as well as Etta and Koko are all the caliber of Aretha in my book.

20. Ever listen to wbgo.org streaming on Saturday mornings?
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 10:19 PM by Kahuna
This is my local jazz (public radio) station. On Saturday mornings they have a program called, "Rhythm Revue," from 10:00am to 2:00pm est. They play really old R&B and blues hits going back to the early fifties to the early seventies. This is a great find for lovers of R&B oldies. They play really obscure stuff and artists like Etta James, Ruth Brown, Wilson Pickett, and Bobby Womack. They play a lot of hits from the Chess label. You should check it out. Otherwise, they play real jazz. It's a great public radio station.

30. This is actually difficult for me
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 11:37 PM by mvd
Now Aretha definitely has the stronger voice. But I love's Gwen's lively and sensual voice, too. So the vocals are equal in enjoyability, and the material is also pretty equal overall. I don't think Aretha always picked material that used her voice enough. Like on "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man." I voted Gwen because she's so far behind.

33. Note that
I think Aretha probably has the strongest female voice ever - so there are a lot of singers who would have a hard time beating Gwen. Gwen's voice is one of my faves.
