Happy Birthday, Paul.

from Garrison Keillor's "The Writer's Almanac":

It's the birthday of New York Times columnist Paul Krugman, born on Long Island, New York (1953). He studied economics at MIT and became one of the leading economists in the U.S., specializing in international trade. In the early 1980s, he worked for President Ronald Reagan's Council of Economic Advisors, but, he said, " that powerful people prefer to take advice from those who make them feel comfortable rather than those who will force them to think hard." He decided that one way he could contribute to the world of economics would be to explain economics to ordinary people, and so he wrote several books in the 1990s for the general public, including The Age of Diminished Expectations (1990), Peddling Prosperity (1994) and Pop Internationalism (1996). He became an op-ed columnist for the New York Times in 1999, and he has since become a fierce critic of the Bush administration. His most recent book is The Great Unraveling (2003).

1. Interesting--Happy Birthday Paul! And keep skewering Dumbo!
He's one of the few voices of sanity left at the rapidly sinking NY Times.

3. Nah, the Times isn't that bad.
Our country and the world would be a poorer place if for some reason the Times ceased to exist.
