it's hard to imagine that it would be untreatable. Same for ocular melanoma - can't the eye be removed? Why not a prostatectomy? Not pleasant, but sure beats a certain death.

I'm just confused about this. I like Bartcop and wish him the best.

29. Yes, standard treatment for ocular melanoma used to be
removal of the eye - don't know for sure of it still is; someone was experimenting with little teflon rings that had some sort of radio-isotope. Anyway, removing the eye worked, I guess, in that you live longer. With most cancers 5 year survival predicts long-term survival - you make it that long & usually it's not the cancer that'll kill you, it'll be old age. Not so with ocular melanoma - survival keeps on dropping out to 15 years post diagnosis. Odd disease. Likewise with removing the prostate gland. Damn disease just gets slowed down a bit, not really stopped.

Part of our problem with this field is that we think of cancer as a disease of a specific organ, when it's equally a systemic disease. We're usually pretty good at treating the site problem, not so good at treating the system.

His Docs tell him that if there is an untreatable cancer to have, THIS is the one. He's planning to AMP UP his output of pages and Radio shows (cleaner language, too)in order to earn more money for Mrs. Bart and the future, and he plans to live like no other. There will be more Poker Fests, more Bart Fests.
Ain't no weeping in the Bart Manor, and he implores us to keep the chin up.
The Hammer will remain high-- higher than ever, in fact.
Bart is one HELL of a trouper, and I'm behind him 100%. He'll become lethal to Ditto Monkeys, now. His focus is strong.
The Hammer is High. Long Live Bart.

bart wants to deal with this in his own way, so please leave him alone about it. he will reveal more when he thinks the time is right. for now he is concentrating on kicking some ditto monkey ass and getting the bfee out of the white house and pentagon. a lot can happen in ten years and knowing how much of a good gambler as well as a fighter bart is, anything can happen.

for those not in financial straits, he would like your support by contributing to keeping his fine work online.

21. We know the man
If you want to do anything for him, please support his page and the radio show.

I am hoping, hoping, HOPING that with the professional production Tommy Mack has been doing, some enterprising liberal network (are you listening, Air America?) will take a chance on BartCop. His shows are getting better and better, and I would LOVE to hear him give the flying monkey right the red-ass on a daily basis.

We're as upset as anyone else here, but I know that tears won't solve anything. Instead, we'll be drinking a toast to our friend BartCop tonight, and hoping that some doctor, somewhere, can halt this disease in its tracks for BC and for everyone else that suffers from it.

One of our other friends died on February 13th. As one of the speakers at his funeral said, "It's better to burn out than to fade away."

He won't go gently into that good night,
Julie

Lord knows I don't want to invade his privacy, but I am having a very hard time processing this news. Bartcop is how I found DU, he has kept me going with his ditto monkey redass, I'm feeling pretty distraught right now.

Perhaps if I knew what type of cancer he has, I could research it and get more informed. Can you PM me? Thanks.

Bunny, I wish I could help, but we don't even know.

There have been two really slow-growing cancers mentioned here; I would tend to believe that it was one of them.

You are so nice to want to help, and I can't help but believe that all the good thoughts (and prayers from those who believe,) will help.

In the meantime, not to offend those believers, but cancer can blow us, too.

Julie

28. Lots of cancers are untreatable, but slow in their progress.
I don't know, unless I have not read carefully (always possible) what he has. But many cancers aren't treated because the treatment diminishes what is a very good life.

I don't know if this makes sense. My Dad has a non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, peripheral T-cell. There is no cure. But he is symptom-free and absolutely doing everything he wants to do. It would not make good sense for him to undergo aggressive treatment now. It is one of those cancers that can't be wiped out, but maybe it will take a very long time for him to become ill. I hope BC is as happy and productive as my Dad has been since his diagnosis. The very best to him. Actually, to both of them.

at the risk of saying something political, ... what if we used, for instance, $200B to find a cure and defend against cancer, instead of using it to defend against Saddam Hussein, like we just did. Why isn't funding for cancer research, part of the federal budget. Just a thought.

And if anyone can beat "unbeatable" cancer it is our Bartman.

Someone who posts in the Bartcop forum please refer them to http://www.laf.org/. This is the Lance Armstrong Cancer Foundation. Listen Lance only got a 47% chance of survival and look what he did with it. Bartcop is a fighter and he's not going to give up. If it is slow moving, there are very good chances that something out there will help him kick it.

Sending you big positive healing hugs Bartcop. You hang in there, you hear.

Sonia

46. Man, that sucks, but check this out!
Hey, Bart, we're all rooting for you. Ten years is a long time in terms of cancer treatment. In the meantime, I have some words for you:

GAMMA SCALPEL!!!

Check it out -- it's been approved for use in Canada (need help getting across the border to Toronto? -- I'm so there!), and I have a friend who's been alive 10 years after being diagnosed with an untreatable, inoperable brain tumour because of it. She was one of the first experimental patients.

Basically, how it works is they find the cancer clusters, triangulate on them in three dimensions, and microwave them with specially-attuned bursts of gamma rays that microwave the cancer and leave the healthy cells alone. Your body just absorbs the dead cancer tissue afterwards. It's quite new and experimental still, but start asking around! I know it sounds very science-fictiony, but I couldn't make this crap up.

Take care of yourself in the meantime, and I hope everything works out ok in the end. :)

I started reading Bartcop back around the 2000 Bush-Gore election, and his site provided me with links over to all the other Dem sites like MWO and DU etc... The funny thing is his site really hasn't changed in design since that time if you think about it. Just more images :)

Bartcop still has plenty of time to fight the good fight. My mom got breast cancer in 1989 and lived till 1998 and in that time managed to tour the world and celebrated happily with her friends and family doing what she enjoyed. Bartcop will do the same I am sure.

55. When I was in my twenties, I read this somewhere:

"Nobody gets out of here alive."

It can be a line the villain says before killing people in a movie, or it can be the truth for us all. No matter what you do to keep yourself healthy or make yourself unhealthy, no matter how much or how little you want to live to be old, no matter if you're a good person or a bad one, no matter if you're a non-believer or a Christian, Jew, Muslim, Buddhist, etc.,

NOBODY GETS OUT OF HERE ALIVE.

And you can't choose how or when you'll die (unless you kill yourself), but you can choose how you'll live.
