1. Ew.
"The Center for Consumer Freedom is a nonprofit coalition supported by restaurants, food companies, and consumers working together to promote personal responsibility and protect consumer choices.

Unlike the anti-consumer activists we monitor and keep in check, we stand up for common sense and personal choice. The growing fraternity of "food cops," health care enforcers, militant activists, meddling bureaucrats, and violent radicals who think they know "what's best for you" are pushing against our basic freedoms. We're here to push back."

I like the idea... but they call PETA lunatics and say they launch a jihad on fast food?

I say I like the idea because I do believe that if someone wants to eat harmful GMO's instead of organic stuff, they should be allowed, but it should be LABELED. Or KFC should be able to call thier shit 'chicken'... but the real shit should be hung in the consumers face... lest they have the majority attitude 'fuck it, ill eat it, even if animals suffer horribly' 'fuck it, ill wear it, even if children suffer horribly'

GODDAMNIT that pissed me off, man :(

2. John555 please reasearch your sources before posting them
This is an industry sponsored site designed to remove consumer protections nder the guise of freedom. While I don't agree with everything PETA or other orgs do, I value the right to sue those who harm consumers.

ActivistCash.com / Center for Consumer Freedom

ActivistCash.com is one of several web sites affiliated with the "Center for Conumer Freedom," a front group for the restaurant, alcohol and tobacco industries. It states that its mission is to expose "where anti-consumer organizations and activists get their money." It attacks activists as "nannies," "anti-choice zealots" and "hypocrites" who pretend to represent grassroots citizens while taking money from foundations. How are activists "anti-choice" or "anti-consumer"? According to ActivistCash, they have a hidden agenda aimed at eliminating your right to eat, drink and smoke as you please in restaurants, hotels and taverns.

In reality, none of the information that ActivistCash "exposes" has ever been hidden. It is available in public foundation reports and IRS tax statements that nonprofit organizations make available to anyone who asks. Most of the information in the ActivistCash database can already be found in public libraries or downloaded via the Internet. Nonprofit organizations are not required to disclose the names of specific individual or institutional donors, but most of the organizations attacked by ActivistCash have gone beyond the requirements of the law in providing the information which ActivistCash is now using to attack them.

As for hypocrisy, ActivistCash keeps the details of its own finances hidden to conceal the fact that its funding comes from the very industries that share a vested interest in attacking activists—specifically, the tobacco and alcohol lobbies, as well as restaurant chains and taverns that want to keep employee wages low, avoid paying health insurance, and drive up sales of their high-markup products: booze, soda pop, fatty foods and cigarettes

Bogus 'Consumer' Group Stripped Of Domain Names

Restaurant and Bar Lobby Behind "Orwellian" PR Campaign

A trade association representing chain restaurants and taverns has surrendered the domain names of two sites designed to hijack web traffic away from the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI), the pro-nutrition advocacy group. The trade association, the Center for Consumer Freedom (CCF), had registered cspinot.com, where it attacked CSPI and it's web site, cspinet.org. CCF had also purchased smartmouth.org, a domain name almost identical to that of Smart-Mouth.org, where CSPI provides information for children about nutrition and food marketing.

CCF is one of a shadowy trio of tax-exempt front groups run by Washington lobbyist Richard Berman. That trio also includes the American Beverage Institute, which fights laws designed to curb drunk driving, and the Employment Policies Institute, which is opposed to raising the minimum wage, particularly in the labor-intensive restaurant industry. CCF used to be named the Guest Choice Network, which was founded with seed money from Philip Morris. Berman controls all the organizations, which operate out of Berman's for-profit business, Berman & Co. The current funders of these groups are not disclosed, but Berman's groups are associated with executives from table-service restaurants like Outback Steakhouse,Chili's, and Pizzeria Uno.

3. thanks NSMA
I just checked back to see if anyone had debunked this link yet. I am not thinking clearly enough due to headache pain-killers I took, but was not so high that I did not see right through this site. I am so tired of companies pretending to be working for the public's interests vis-a-vis bogus "non-profits." I appreciate that you took the time to explain what I in my addled state could not.

5. No apologies and it's not about being Democratic or Repub
I do wonder what made you think the site was valuable. You have posted some great links. The one from the Smithsonian last night was great. This one was obvious propaganda to me.

What was it that appealed to you about the site?

6. John, try giving a reason along with your links
Do you agree with what you are linking us to? Do you disagree? I love when people provide links, but a reason for providing the link, helps me to decide if I should clikc onto it, or not. Thanks

7. I enjoy posting links.
Edited on Wed Jul-09-03 12:19 AM by John555
Many of my boards I post on are strong Republicains near where I live and there is very few to none Democrat boards near where I live or even in the State of Tennessee. I have feeling more Tennessee Republicains are on the net then Democrats for some reason. I enjoy posting links to people that will read them instead of passing them up like some do on these boards I have posted on. You people at least look at them and not just skip them. I look at this as a hobbie.

Thanks.

good for people to see the manner in which propaganda is put out by lobbyists in such a way as to seduce people into thinking THEY are on their side when in fact they are ONLY on THEIR OWN side and could care less about consumers having choice. If anything these giant corporations have whittled down consumer choices.

Actually there are several posters on DU from Tenn. What section of the state are you in?

9.  Tennessee
You have heard of Cookeville, Tennessee where the family dog was shot by a policeman? This made national and world wide news. Cookeville is 90 miles east of Nashville. The link is to a newspaper reporter that has a site here about the city government being out of control and the dog shooting. http://www.putnampit.com I don't know what side he is on Democrat or Republicain.

Thanks.

11. It was an interesting site
Looks like lots of courruption in your home town. Whoever this guy is he's got lots of good reasons to not care for your local government.

Compared to this rag from your neck of the woods, looks like pretty good reading.

13. Tennessee Town.
This town has 30,000 people in the city and 100,000 people in the county. It alot bigger now than ever. The biggest problem here is the Meth drug problem and it's out of control here. The police and locals don't know how to deal with it.

14. meth is a big problem here too (Riverside county)
people set up trailers and leave the dangerous residue behind for the rest to clean up.. They do bust some, but most escape detection:(

Personally, I think the whole drug problem would "go away" if young people had more hope for their futures.. If one is a 10th grader with mediocre grades and comes from a poor family, they pretty much know that the fancy new car and nice house will not be in their future unless they do something illegal..:(

15. Did a little more reading up on your Putnam Pit
He is a gadfly and agitator who actually lives in Los Angeles. I don't know what is so about your county and city officials but he has an axe to grind. There are several articles about his legal case to get the city to link to him..interesting
