The Disputation
by Hyam Maccoby

directed by Donna Northcott

February 12 – 29
Regional premiere
The New Jewish Theatre’s first foray into historical drama brings this highly dramatic play to our stage. During the Inquisition and prior to the expulsion of the Jews in 1492, “disputations" were commonly arranged between Christian and Jewish theologians to convince the Jews to disavow their Jewish identities and convert to Catholicism. One of the most famous of these debates took place in the court of King James of Aragon in Barcelona in 1263 between the monk Pablo Christiani and revered Talmudic scholar Rabbi Moses ben Nachman (also know as the Ramban). The Church felt they had a formidable representative in Pablo Christiani, himself a Jew converted to Christianity. Rabbi Moses courageously takes advantage of a royal guarantee of free speech to argue his side. King James grapples with his "pagan" soul throughout; while his Queen would as soon see the matter settled by sword.

1. I wish I could see that!
Any word on if it's coming to Toronto? I think they'd get a big audience here.

3. NJT is a local group who produces
plays locally in St Louis. While some of the actors are professionals (meaning they are members of Actors Equity or other professional groups) it is not a touring group. I would think that if there is a local Jewish Theatre group in Toronto then they could comission the play.

St Louis may be small, Jewishly speaking (approx. 60,000 Jews) but there is A LOT going on in the Jewish community. Many opportunities for learning and such.

5. 60,000 is small?
In Colorado Springs we only have 2 temples with a combined membership of less than 500 families! 60,000 is huge!
