1. Al
the perfect song. I accidently voted of American Pie though...

The Theme from Shaft is another great song and would be my second choice...Hard to not vote for Carol King too!

I would have put Roberta Flack's "Killing Me Softly" on a "best of" the number 1s list for the early 70's...but this ain't my list. :)

2. "Killing Me Softly" was a #1 hit in early 1973.

So far, the polls only go up to July of '72. So who knows, you may see Roberta Flack in the next installment!

8. oops, you're right
I was thinking of "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", which I beleive was from 1972. I like "Killing Me Softly" a little more, though. Both great songs imo.

4. "Bridge Over Troubled Water" would get my vote
but it is absent from your list. It was #1 for six weeks in 1970.

6. Try the previous poll. It's listed there.

The subject line reads, BEST #1 HIT of the EARLY 1970s? (Part 1)

7. "First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" would be up there
as a top choice of mine, but that one is also missing from your list.
It was #1 for six weeks in 1972 (although the song was originally on Roberta Flack's 1969 album release).

9. Frankly, I despise that song.

For me, that damned thing is like listening to funeral music. That's why I left it off.

I absolutely despise that song. My dad and husband love it, so I am routinely subjected to it. :puke:

But I figured, some folks would want to vote for it. And unfortunately, I was right.

You know I've always loved your music polls! :hi:

(But I guess I'm insulting the other people who voted for it! Oh well, I really do love the other choices - had a hard time picking my favorite!)

...what *can* you argue about?

Well, politics I guess, but that kind of undercuts my premise....

Much worse than most sitcom themes.

I want to know who voted for it. I will be coming after them.

12. Christ, did the 70's ever suck. I guess pop music from any decade....
is horrible. It's nearly impossible to pick, there is no "best". The least worst is probably Rod Stewart.

Anyone who likes different music than they do is an ignorant philistine with horrible taste. Period. End of story.

24. Sure there were good artists in the 70's they just aren't represented here
Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Aerosmith was good in the 70's, AC/DC, Motorhead, Rush, Pink Floyd, Sex Pistols, The Stones had a good run in the 70's even if their late 60's stuff is best, Judas Priest, Parliment Funkadelic, Bob Marley and many more. I know a few of these bands started in the 60's but did their best work in the 70's. (Zep, Sabbath, Floyd) The really good music from any decade isn't pop.

26. What yr listing is a subset of pop.
Your listing rock bands. Its a subgenre of pop.

And yes you are correct. There where some excellent rock coming out of the early 70s. I think Led Zep and Black Sabbath did their best work back then. Deep Purple, too.

Now that we have that stupidity out of the way, perhaps those DUers with broader musical minds can enjoy the poll! :eyes:

16. How can you call Al Green or Bill Withers pop???!!???

They made soul songs. Some of them were so good that they had crossover success. I guess you've never heard "Let's Stay Together."

17. When did I call them "pop?"
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 06:31 PM by NightTrain
The name of this poll is "BEST #1 HITS of the EARLY 1970s?" Nowhere does it say a thing about "pop" music.

Withers and Green are soul singers who also had hits with the pop audience. What's not to understand?

19. Not you Night Train...the other guy

He said that pop music sucks, well Bill Withers and Al Green weren't pop. They didn't make "pop" songs.

Just because a song becomes popular doesn't mean that they made "pop" song.

"Pop" even though it means popular, is a genre to me. For instance Will Smith makes "pop" music - not hip hop. Even the songs that ain't popular are still pop. While The Outkast make hip hop. Even the songs that are popular are still hip hop.

Hey, it's his loss.

Personally, I'll take Al Green over King Crimson any day of the week!

20. Songs on the charts were much better back then; I don't hate any
of these. Voted for "Maggie May" because I loved that song back then, and I still do. From the best Rod Stewart album ever. I bought that one when I was in high school.

I think some of Steely Dans best would fit in some "best of early 70s" lists.

(I voted for Maggie Mae...that whole ablum, Every Picture Tells a Story, was great).

32. This version of "Family Affair" was okay, I guess...
...but I thought the version by Sly & The Family Stone was much better. I never thought Mr. French was much of a drummer, but I suppose Buffy and Jody were passable, if somewhat derivative. And yes, I'm being a nit-picky smartass (there's one of us in every crowd, y'know? ;-) ).
