http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2008/11/11/MNV9142C50.DTLA sculpture by Tony Dow, best known for playing big brother Wally on "Leave It to Beaver," is on its way to France. Whether it's going to the Louvre is a matter of semantics.
The Associated Press reported Tuesday that Dow's sculpture will be on display next month "at the Louvre." Actually, it's going to the Carrousel du Louvre - a shopping center and exhibition space that's near the main museum. Reached by phone, a director at the Karen Lynne Galleries confirmed that Dow's sculpture and the work of 11 of the gallery's other artists will be displayed from Dec. 11-14 at the Carrousel du Louvre.
But Ward and June Cleaver would probably still be proud. Dow's bronze abstract sculpture of a woman holding a shield, titled "Unarmed Warrior," was selected as part of the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts, an annual judged exhibition that dates back more than 100 years. The 63-year-old is also one of the more noted child-actor success stories, working as a television director and visual effects producer since the sitcom went off the air in 1963 after six years.
"Of course, I'm really proud of 'Leave It to Beaver' and my directing career in television," Dow told the Associated Press. "I'm really proud of them, but this is interesting because I don't think they know anything about that at the Louvre."
