Car insurance question
Anyone have experience registering and insuring a car at, say, a family member's home where insurance is quite inexpensive but living and driving in a major city?

Not that I would ever do something so dishonest, mind you!

1. I know a number of people who have done that here in Vegas.
One guy had relatives in Idaho and he kept his car registered and insured under their address. It saved him a good $1500 a year in insurance premiums and registration fees (Nevada has some of the highest registration fees in the country IIRC).

I have also known some people who live and work in Vegas but have friends or family over the county line in a little town called Pahrump who claim to live there and that saves them about $50 a month in insurance costs.

For the record, I live in Vegas and all of my documentation is listed under my real address. And let me tell you, it sucks. :(

12. LOL - that's cute - actually I have "fought" for the road with moose
.
.
.

had to slow down, and try to "pass" a moose who just wouldn't get off the road,

he was only going about 15 kliks an hour, and it was 2 kilometers before the took to the bush!

4. i live in upstate
N.Y. and pay an extra penalty because it's within 90 miles of NYC and NJ.. the people that live up the road 2 miles save hundreds because they are out of range, also pay extra because my son has a license and live at home. this is one subject that a candidate should jump on, they talk about everything but the insurance companies.. My Ins. also went up because a hit and run driver wiped out one side of my new car and they paid to repair it.

2. hmmm - how would one DO that - ?
.
.
.

I'm thinking that all other identification, specifically one's driver's license would have to match the same address as the relatives . .

And seeing as the "question" suggests a need to lower insurance costs - the ONE most expensive coverage is the "collision" part.

That's why I decided long ago to just keep an older vehicle (mine just slides under emission control standards) and NO collision coverage.

I see one of the biggest problems is that people want newer vehicles, usually financed, so "collision" coverage is mandatory to cover the possible loss to the insurer.

Oh just for comparison, I pay $400 Canuk bucks to insure this for a year - -

oh OK - a bigger pic wold be nice !

ah, I'm getting the camping "itch"

I can tell

taking advantage of DU to post my camping pix -

oh well

:silly:

5. Camping itch?
Is there treatment for that?

My real question was what happens if you have to make a claim? If your car is stolen or you're in an accident? Will the insurance company refused to pay if the car I register in NC is garaged all year in NYC?

6. Treatment for camping itch - 50 bucks of gas - 5 cases of beer !!
.
.
.

my REAL answer to your multi-tipped question . .

If my car is stolen, or damaged while I am NOT in the car, a provision called "comprehensive" , better known as "fire and theft" will cover that . .

As for being in an accident, the "liability" will cover lawsuits, damage to the other persons vehicle, etcetera..

physical damage to my vehicle is NOT covered, but when you look at MY vehicle,

two things become obvious, - it is old and it is BIG !!

and it's paid for

so "collision" coverage would just be insane

and is usually the most expensive portion of insurance policies

so for those that gotta have that $40-60,000 SUV that'll never see the bush - I got no sympathies !!

oh, just thot I'd mention, I bought that "beast" in '90 for 3 grand - yup THREE - as in $3,000 -

and nope - NOT for sale !!

7. my advice: don't do it.
mrs. unblock is in the insurance biz, so i know a thing or two.

insurance companies have special investigative units, basically in-house private detectives who hunts down people violating all sorts of rules. insuring someone else's car, or lying about not having teenage drivers on the car, that sort of thing.

mrs. unblock thinks that would be a very fun job.

anyway, they do find people and the do cancel insurance and sometimes they do even refer people for prosecution.

if you want to save on insurance, there are better ways:

1) shop around
2) consider dropping collision, especially if the car's of relatively low value
3) raise all deductibles
4) consider the legal threashold limit. personally, having been in a severe car accident, i insist on keeping the right to sue for an unlimited amount. however, you can save a LOT by accepting a limit
5) cancel unnecessary or redundant insurance; your auto insurance may also include extra medical or salary continuation insurance that you may already be covered for elsewhere, or simply feel you don't need.

then, of course, you could always consider trading in your car for one that's cheaper to insure ... people usually forget to price in insurance when they shop for a car....

10. Let me add to this
On every insurance application you are asked "Where do you live?", "Where is the vehicle garaged?" (parked for the night), "How far one way to work?". A deceptive answer to any or all of these questions will invalidate your coverage. Auto liability insurance is one of the best bargains in the world. We pay $90.00 a mo. for liability coverage on three vehicles, one of which is a small RV. For that we are covered up to $400,000 per person/ per incident if we do damage to another person or their property. That friends is cheap. And they will send their lawyers to defend you if need be. Shop at Independent agents who can do comparitive ratings to find the cheapest premium. Never cover a paid for vehicle for damage to your vehicle. In the long run it is cheaper just to fix it. If someone else damages your vehicle their insurance pays.

Woof

that has transfered in recently within the past few years. All oldtimers there do not have cars unless they are out in the burbs.

11. Illegal in Indiana.
You have 6 months to register your car in Indiana when you move here. There was a problem back in the days when our excise taxes were high. People would register their vehicles in KY for FL where they had vacation homes and taxes were lower.

You could try it. What's the worst that could happen? I don't know if you could be prosecuted for Fraud, but at the least your Ins. Co. would cancel you, and "put your shit in the street" so that the only companies that would touch you are the "Need insurance today? Been Suspended? Been DUI? No Problem!" companies that advertise on "Jerry Springer"...
