Racism Still Exists

Last night after CNN called Ohio for Obama, I knew he had won, I was a little beveraged but walked up to the little store, it is owned by a nice Korean family, and their son works at night, we always talk, and I always give him history 'lessons' as he wants to know more about America
I told him that Obama had won, that Ohio put him over the top, there was a right winger in there
listening in, and yelled out, "He will never finish his term, he is a black guy"
I looked at him and said "He is human, and American, and he is now the President"
"Yeah, but he is black, I will never vote for those people, or Mexicans, they are scum"
I didnt want to make a scene, since I was slighly sh*tfaced, but still incredibly angry, I wanted to slam him in the face, but I thought it wasnt worth it, people like that are pure evil.
He left, and a few minutes later, I went back to my place feeling good about the election and
celebrating.

Maybe Obama's presidency will bring racial issues to the forefront in our culture where we can talk about them intelligently instead of it being a hush-hush type issue that rarely sees the light of day. I'm talking about the kind of conversations where people realize and bring to light their racist attitudes. How many times did you hear the question, "Is America ready for a black president?" They reduced Obama to his skin color, racism right their on the national news networks and nobody in the media seemed to think anything was wrong with it. They didn't even recognize it as racism.

I'm glad you kept your cool there at the store. That guy wasn't worth going to jail for.

Making racism an issue will be one way we can stop it, at least in some people. I respected what Michelle said about being told that you are considered lesser than whites by the people who love you. How horrible is it that a parent has to believe and teach their child that?
