Fonts stink!
It's not just finding a close equivalent to a $150 font that Adobe sells. When you find it, the bloody thing is in Apple's kooky Type1 format (PFB).

While Winbloat 2000 and XP have built-in support, I discovered that not all apps can use these fonts until after Adobe Type Manager (ATM) or the free lite version is installed.

Well, having given them my info, it turns out there's an error 404 on the download page so I couldn't get it.

So go http://www.pctip.ch/downloads/dl/23414.asp&prev=/search%3Fq%3Ddownload%2Badobe%2Btype%2Bmanager%2Blite%26hl%3Den%26lr%3D%26ie%3DUTF-8%26oe%3DUTF-8">here instead. :D (eh, this IS the free lite version. I'm sure you know where to fiiiiiind the 'deluxe' version, which is a pointless waste... so's winbloat, but I need my graphics application for the moment!)

2. Type 1 fonts are not Apple, and not kooky
Edited on Sat Feb-28-04 12:38 AM by Atman
Type 1 fonts are true Postscript fonts, the gold standard. Apple tried TrueType for a while, virtually forced to in some sort of deal with MS, I believe (though I may be wrong about this detail...it was a while ago). The crappy TrueType fonts Windows uses are not even accepted at most professional service bureaus because they crash high-end output devices. Most will accept TT fonts only if you sign a waiver saying you don't care how your output actually comes out.

Also, if you own any Adobe products, most came with a version of ATM on the disks. Or at least, used to. I know Illustrator did.

4. I own Premiere...
I should have checked it first...

Oh yeah, Apple invented TrueType... :D http://www.vcnet.com/bms/departments/innovation.shtml has more, scroll down to "in fact TrueType was invented by Apple Computer in 1989" under 'ClearType'...

I wish there was an easy and free way to convert these things, I just need my two fonts for one stinking web site... Why Word can use the font yet PhotoImpact can't... argh!

5. TrueType...
was a joint development of Apple and Microsoft to break the Adobe monopoly.

Newer fonts are called Open Type and later versions of Windows have built in support. Otherwise you need Adobe Type Manager.

Haven't had a Mac lately. Most of my work requires Windows machines. But Open Type is Adobe and I'm surprised Apple doesn't handle it.

10. Apple supports Open Type
They started with OSX version 10.0, and any Windows font can now be used on a Mac.

6. Perhaps I'm shy...
:D

I already have it in one format. Windows 2000 purports to support the format. Maybe they do, but not all the apps do...

Maybe I just need to bite the bullet and buy Photoshop.

7. I read about a study - maybe in the mid 90's
that found on average that papers written by students using Macs was judged to be inferior (slightly) to students using a Windows PC. They surmised that the Mac users spent more time making their papers "look pretty" while the Windows users spent that time on content.

In some way I guess it's kind of like the "Texas Souffle" a nickname applied to * while he was in Alabama working on that campaign. Looks good on the outside, but not a lot of substance.

What is written is more important than how it looks.

8. That says as much about the teachers doing the grading as it does
the students.

9. It may or may not.
I don't know how the study was done, but if I was doing it, I'd take the papers in electronic format and convert them all to the same typeface and size. Only then would they be graded for content and only by people who did not know what platform the document was written on.

Only way to make something as subjective as this at least a bit objective. Computers are tools, use the best tool for the job.
