I'm a victim of id theft!
Someone stole my credit card number that I have and never used. Boy, I thought I was careful but....
I made all the necessary phone calls, cancelations, etc...
Be careful out there everybody. By the way, zero liability for my husband and me! The person who stole the number made $3000 of purchases!!! :evilfrown:

7. Glad that is all they got.
A friend of mine had his car broken into while he was running on a trail. The wallet was locked in the trunk, but with the trunk release in the car, that was not a problem.

They took his cell phone (with all his contacts' numbers programmed into it), as well as his entire wallet containing about $300 in cash.

Of course, he had to replace *everything* (driver's license, credit cards, etc.) The problem for him was not the credit cards but his ATM card which has a Visa logo on it. It is used like a credit card but cleaned out his checking account (of another $800.) The bank took four weeks--and a lot of hassle-- to credit his account for the money.

Since he told me that, I have changed my ATM card for one without credit card provisions (can only be used at an ATM or a POS with a PIN request.) I used a bona fide credit card for credit purchases.

And, I have inventoried everything in my wallet, along with contact numbers to call in an emergency. I have copies of the inventory in sealed envelopes at home and at my office.

6. I read that as "id theft" at first...
I was wondering who had snatched your id, and how they got your superego to let them have it.

10. I know how frustrating that is!
We had a credit card stolen. The police called us. It had been used once at Best Buy to purchase a washer. Someone tried at Dillar's, but the savvy staff asked for ID, the people took off (the staff kept the card and she called the police. I didn't miss the card as it was one we weren't using. The police called before we got the bill. I am so glad you were not held liable.

Here's a link. It won't stop the theft and use of stolen credit cards, but it will put a process in place to keep anyone from being able to open credit in your name.

12. Thanks!
Actually, yesterday, I reported a fraud alert at one of the credit bureaus and it will transfer to the other 2 main agencies. Now I know how important it is to check your credit report!
