Wisconsin DU'ers - How is Greenbay?

I live in the Bay Area, CA (San Ramon to be exact.) I do like it, but in the next 5 years or so we're thinking of moving to get more house for our buck, and also ditching the traffic that plagues us all here.

So...i'm told Greenbay is nice...is it? Is it a pretty progressive community?

2. I live 110 miles west of Green Bay

I do business there and travel there often. Green Bay is pretty Blue Collar. Traffic in the area has increased dramatically over the fast 6-7 years that I've been going there.

Some of the outlying suburbs are pretty nice. Green Bay is at the north end of the fox river valley complex which includes Appleton, Oshkosh and Fond du Lac. Of all the communities, I liked Oshkosh best.

3. Ahhhh, but Fond du Lac has Shreiner's. How can you not like that?

Everytime I come up I take Grandma for a drive up to Shreiner's for the fish fry. :hi:

Fond du Lac Springs, uggh our old rival in football.

The best fish fry is found at Mariques in GB.

Lots of beer drinking too. Course that could be said for the entire state, LOL!

8. Madison is pretty nice...very laid back.

I was there the summer before last. Very pleasant place.

Madison is the island of sanity in Wisconsin, although the whole NW corner of the state is pretty liberal, just sparsly populated.

9. I live in Green Bay, a transplanted Milwaukeean.

It's got a very good library system, there are liberals here, Greens, and a strong union presence.

There are other cultures here-Hmong, Mexican, African-American, and of course many Native-Americans.

It has a University of Wisconsin extension, my alma mater {and hippiechick's} UWGB.

The overall political environment is conservative though.

It is a regional medical center, has an international airport and the Green Bay Packers.

It has high pollution from the paper mills. There are plenty of parks and recreational areas.

We've been living here since 1988. We would like to move to Hawaii now, had enough Wisconsin winters. But I don't know what kind of a music scene they have in Hawaii-hint, hint.

10. Move to Sheboygan instead.

I live here in Sheboygan, about an hour's drive south of Green Bay.

Pretty much a mix of liberal and conservative here, best part is people don't really care if you are lib or conserv.

Even a car with a liberal bumpersticker on it will be left alone, almost always.

Good schools, low crime, not hard to get around and find shops you need, a very good Arts Center and live theater, good library, and those who miss "Bratwurst Days" every summer are missing a really good time.

11. Not progressive

I don't live in Green Bay or go there often but from what I can tell of the general area, being somewhere within an hours drive, it is pretty conservative. Let's just say that Northeast Wisconsin is much more conservative than rural Ohio where I grew up. Although the area is getting a little more diverse, it didn't used to be and people are a bit xenophobic. If you are not white, I don't recommend moving there. Being from California, it might take you several years to fit in depending on how different your appearance and mannerisms are from them. They seem to be more "traditional" in gender roles and stereotyping (There was even an article about how women make quite a bit less than men compared to the national average). People drink a lot of alcohol, watch football religiously (Packers), go hunting, go fishing (especially ice fishing), and go snowmobiling. If those things are not your idea of a good time, you might not want to move there.
Alright, maybe living in Green Bay is different. I live in a rural area and hang around mostly blue collar people here. Perhaps, urban professionals are different and I am making an unfair broad generalization. I do believe that they do vote heavily Republican (above 60%) though and I have seen articles about them adapting to diversity, mostly with an increase in Hispanic immigrants which were few even 20 years ago.
There is probably much better traffic conditions than you are used to and you definietely get more house for your money than you would in California.
It is cold though and snows a lot in the winter. Winter lasts a long time too.
