1. DH has tried them.
He says that at the restaurant they come 5 for a dollar? I went to the site and each little burger is 140 cals and 60 grams of fat. What exactly is so good about them?

4. They have a smokey, onion tinged flavor going on that is very unique...
Probably not real good for you...but excellent when you want to treat yourself. :)

6. You deserve a treat.
That is what the site emphasized; the onion flavor permeates the meat and the bun. Then there is a pickle in the middle.

5. There is no way each burger is 140 calories with 60 grams of fat
A gram of fat has 9 calories.

7. 60 cals from fat, not 60 grams.
Good catch. Have you tried them?

8. I've never been an acolyte of even the "fresh" versions, so I have to ask:
and I'm asking this honestly as a confirmed and lifelong "dog and burger guy."

What is it that's so appealing? The grease? The onions? The bun? Or some indescribable combination thereof? (Any answer is OK with me; I'm just asking for your opinion here, not preparing to argue or judge.)

Did you microwave them or stick them into the oven? Did you "re-condimate," as I do when I throw a thick layer of dill-pickle relish and some Hellman's msyo onto the occasional Burger King "Big Fish" that finds it way into the house at lunchtime?

I do actually WANT to find a reason to like those slidey little bastards; remember that I'm kind of a fanatic about preserving foodish Americana, no matter the form it takes, or the damage it cause to my arteries.

So give me a reason (and it won't take that strong of an argument) why I should drop by the grocery store tomorrow on my way home from taking the Little Guy to school, and pick up some frozen White Castles to have for lunch. It won't take a lot to convince me, but I'd like to know what additive items I should be prepared to have ready.

Yours in The Spirit Of Burger Brotherhood,

Redstone

11. OK Redstone, I'll give it a shot...
I'm a dog/burger/pizza/chicken wing guy myself.

I'm a diabetic, so i have to eat well. Lots of fruit, cottage cheese, veggies, tuna, etc. However, that does not mean that I can't treat myself once in awhile. And when i want to treat myself, I eat the above foods.

Now, about these little White Castle things...

Two to a package. Open the end of the plastic package, separate them while in the package, and nuke for a minute or two I think. They are hotter than hell when they come out, so you dump them on a plate to let them cool, while nuking the next batch, and then the next batch of two if you are really hungry.

While they are cooling, that onion smell fills up the kitchen. Go get yourself a few cold cans of lemonade and have them ready.

Get your 6 little burgers on a plate, and wash then down with the cold lemonade.

The buns cook unevenly in the microwave. Part of the bun is soft, and part of the bun is unnaturally crunchy. This adds to the tactile delight of the chewing process.

It is an imperfect food in an imperfect world. They are too hot to eat out of the microwave, so you wash them down with something cold. You know they are entirely unhealthy, but you don't care because they are so freaking delicious. You revel in the unusual size of these little stupid burgers. You like the crunchy part of the bun...it is almost like eating stale bread that tastes good.

If you really don't care that day about what you put in your body...slop some mayonnaise on them.

Sigh. I think I just had a food orgasm. :)

16. Those things are terrible for you! I eat them with extra catsup.
Maybe a fresh pickle. They are nowhere near as good as the fresh ones, but I have not seen a WC in several years, so the frozen ones have to do.
I'm diabetic, too, and have to watch what I eat, but sometimes I just can't anymore.

19. Sounds like you like the MW method.
Apparently you can heat them in the oven using a broiler pan. You put water in the bottom pan then place a slyder over one of the slots in the top pan. Then seal all around with foil so the burger steams. http://www.whitecastle.com/_pages/reheat.asp

There are worse foods for diabetes, but it is good you consider these an occasional treat. As for the mayonnaise, it is actually one of the better condiments when it comes to diabetes. Mostly fat and protein. Just take an extra walk or do some yoga. Not trying to enable here, just being realistic.

29. They are great ...
after a six pack or two. Nothing like a bag of sliders when you're hammered.

So, what additive? Beer - and lots of it!

This is why I haven't had sliders in about 20 years. But I remember them well. Sort of.

At least the frozen ones are. After eating those things...well let's just say I know what it feels like now to have a colonic.

I know they are an east coast staple and have heard good things about them.

24. IMHO the frozen are a pale imitation of the real White Castles
but they'll do in a pinch. You need to supply your own pickle and ketchup for a more authentic experience.

26. I love 'em
But they're mightily expensive. Plus Mr. MG is a WC connoisseur (he grew up in the midwest but there are no WCs here) and he says the frozen ones don't even vaguely resemble the fresh ones. I've never had a fresh one, so I'm happy with the frozen--I guess I don't know what I'm missing.

27. I'm a diabetic too and I'd be scared as hell to eat those...
...because I know I would suffer for it. I could eat them without the buns, but that would be silly.

Perhaps they taste so good to you specifically BECAUSE you are diabetic and don't get much to really enjoy. I know at times I am so hungry for something good that a little hamburger would be better than sex. :eyeroll:

They're not QUITE as good as getting a bag of 'em from the White Castle drive-thru, but I've just about perfected my microwave timing on them and they are HOLY CRAP GOOD!!!
