9. well he was a tiny little kitten sitting in the middle of the street..
I was stopped at a light, turned my head and saw him in the middle of the street. If I had not jumped out of my van he would have been dead 30 seconds later. The part of hell that is kept, for those who would have just drove off, is a place I don't want to visit.

Right this second he is sitting in my lap, 14 or 15 years later happy and fat. If nothing else I have done one thing right.

14. To save them from a miserable short life.
I found them on the side of the road after being stopped by a trooper for speeding. I kept hearing tiny "meows" in the field next to the road. I brought them home & my dogs seemed to be OK with it so they were allowed to stay (allowed by the dogs). If the dogs would have rejected them I would have vetted them & found them good homes. I have a weakness for helping out animals in need. It just seems to be the right thing to do.

The cats succeeded. Mice departed.

That was almost 12 years ago. Now Mouse and Simba remind us that they are at the top of the food chain:
they eat whenever they want (Mom provides food/water); they sleep all day inside and party all night
outside.

I have said for years that when I'm reincarnated I want to come back as my cat.

27. The Truth: I wanted a dog
But I lived in an apartment at the time that would not allow me to keep a dog. Also, at the time I was volunteering at an animal shelter, and we had so many cats that were being "put down", and I just decided rather impulsively to adopt one of those cats. He was very frustrating at first, but over the years we have learned to get along.

Cats have them too.

They mark houses with the "there's already a cat here - go find your own big pink monkey servants"

Cats looking for shelter just try to find a house without the mark, so they can get a staff like other cats have.

53. do you like any animals?
I actually like cats, which is why I have one. I grew up around cats, and they all had different personalities, and were really fun pets.

My boyfriend, like you, hates cats.

And then he met mine.

There are certain breeds of cats which have a dog-like personality. They're extremely loyal and playful and like to snuggle. They greet you at the door, follow you around the house (or outside if you let them outside with you). They get jealous of your lovers. And unlike a dog, you don't have to walk them or pick up their poo, and can actually leave them a few days and your house won't be destroyed when you come home.

Also, unless you own your own home, dogs are much less welcome tenants. It's much easier to find a rental that allows cats than dogs.

There's a really cool product, cheaper to own than an iPhone which will actually take care of the only downside of owning a cat: cleaning the litter box. Google "Litter Robot." It's a cool product that really does work.

So, loving, loyal animal who's pretty darned self-sufficient.

The trick is finding the right breed for the personality traits you want, and to choose a pet that is the opposite gender. They actually do crush on you if you are the opposite gender, while same gender can sometimes clash.

My boyfriend still doesn't like cats, but he loves mine so much he actually brags about him to people (imagine that).

54. He really hates dogs. Especially pit bulls.
A roving pack of rabid pit bulls attacked his prize veal calf once, at the 4-H show where he was competing, Because they hadn't completed the judging yet, he lost his ribbon on the technicality that his exhibit had to be alive at the time of the award ceremony, and by then there wasn't enough left of poor Lulabelle to starve a bird on.

here is one reason: this little critter was a feral tyke living under a slum that I stumbled across while feeding some other ferals just around 9/11/01:

Her name is Piewacket and she is lying in my lap right now.

65. My mom's Siamese (the mother cat) was named Piewacket.
That cat babysat me. I kid you not. When my mother was pregnant with me, that cat would lay with her ear on my mother's stomach. She would sleep in my crib before I was born too. Then after I was born, she never slept in the crib again. She sat at the foot of the crib and watched me sleep though. She sat like a statue. If I made a sound or moved, she would go bite my mother on her ankles to come check me and make sure I was ok. One of my first memories is seeing that cat guarding over me.

Yogi does that now in a different way when I go to sleep. When I first get into bed, he looks out the window for about 10 minutes. He looks the yard over really thoroughly. Then, he sits in my doorway for another 10 minutes or so. It's like he's the sentry or something. After he is sure all is clear, he gets on the bed with me and sits in a meditation pose for another 10 minutes while still looking around the room. After he is sure everything is all clear, he curls up next to me and goes to sleep too.

58. I get that it's a copycat, but .... I need to rant a little.
Edited on Mon Oct-27-08 09:23 PM by femmocrat
I have an ancient cat. He's a nice cat, but doesn't do anything interesting except eat, sleep, and meow for food when he already has a full dish. (On edit: he was a rescue from a shelter.)

We live in the country, but he doesn't even hunt. That's OK, though... I don't really want dead mice on my porch and he doesn't bother the birds or chipmunks. He doesn't even annoy the dogs.

But... what has me annoyed is that we now have 2 feral cats who have taken up residence in the back yard. I hate them! No, I am NOT going to trap them and spend money to have them neutered. I just want them to leave. I hear them outside screeching at night and one of them sprays all over the shrubbery. If one of them gives birth out there, I don't know what I will do with kittens.

With apologies in advance to all responsible cat-lovers, I truly hate people who don't neuter their cats and let them breed and run wild. They think the countryside is their dumping ground for unwanted felines.

:grr:

66. inherited him. i'm a dog person, but i really like this cat.
he does stuff like he comes on command, sits on command, growls at the door.

he's also a total pushover. just the nicest big dumb cat you ever saw.

86. Why do you hate America?

To answer your question, her mother had kittens under my house and I adopted them all.

She is my daughter!

89. We adopted Guinness when he was a kitten.
Our 15-year-old was going through a rough patch - he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's disease and was depressed. I was trying to help him feel better, so I asked him if he would like a kitten. He said yes, and I picked up the phone and called the humane society. We picked up this adorable tuxedo kitten that day, and our son named him Guinness, after the black Irish stout with the white head. Guinness was Ryan's constant companion, and made all of us laugh every day. He was Ryan's medicine cat.
Ryan did well with his treatment and is all grown up, moved away and is married now. Whenever he visits us, he makes a beeline for his Guinness, who is always happy to see him. Guinness is nearly 11 years old now, and we are very devoted to him. He's a great cat.

90. Cats I love...Dogs, not so much.
I'm actually phobic of dogs but an attack at age five and rabies shots will do that to you. All dogs...toy poodles will send me cowering in the corner, collies make me squirm, basset hounds terrify me.

Where did I get my cats? They're offspring of my cat that some asshole poisoned and a stray. I had 5 but we're down to 2. (While I was away at college, my parents decided they were going to be outside cats...in the city. It's kind of a sore subject 6 years later.) Then we got adopted by a stray that we didn't think was going to survive the night when we found him.
