Who should be the next subject of a billyskank portrait?
I haven't done one in almost a year, and I haven't done a drawing of any kind in about eight months. Who should be the subject of my next one?

In the past I have done redqueen:

and BarenakedLady:

I also did a nude which was deemed too hot for DU, so I shall not directly link it again:

http://homepage.ntlworld.com/richard-wild/artwork/n-1024.html

Going back further in time, there was another one of BarenakedLady (so sue me, I like her):

Sugar Smack, who remembers her?

And AirmensMom:

5. Choose your picture.
I only request that the shot be close enough that I can clearly see the shape of your features.

I think you should just stick me in all of your drawings. Like I'll be peering out from behind a shoulder or something. Or just a toe.

21. I use the same technique I use to draw everything else.
I just try to draw exactly what my eye sees; where the lines go, I try to make my hand follow. Where the subject is dark, I shade with great pressure, in the regions that are light I use little or no pressure.

The first thing I do with any portrait is sketch the general outline. Once I've done that I usually go straight to shading in their hair, because it is the hardest bit. (Well, actually I always fill in their irises and pupils first. Don't really know why).

I look at the subject's hair and note where the regions of dark and light are, and then try to represent them on my drawing. When I've finished, it will look something like a patchwork. Once I've finished it, I will them blend the dark and light regions together with graded shading. When I've finished this, it usually ends up looking something like the subject.

Like I said, this isn't really any different to what I do with the rest of the picture. The only thing about hair is that it is such a painstaking process to do it properly. Almost to the point of being painful. I actually sort of hate it. And love it at the same time.

Maybe I'll take scans of a drawing as I do it, in stages, to show how I build up a portrait. That might be interesting.

29. Step by step scans would be cool.
I always do hair last, because I hate it, haha. Plus, I start from the eyes and nose and work my way out to manage the proportions.

33. I do that too.
I find it very hard to sketch the outline of a person's face and then fill in their features. This almost never results in a lifelike sketch.

I always seem to tackle it in the same order. Right eye first, then the left eye, then the nose, mouth, then finally I sketch in their chin and jawline, then the sides of their face, then the outline of their hair.

One of the things I have noticed: the distance between a person's eyes is invariably the same as one eye's width.

39. I think that's the order I go in as well.
Seems like a logical progression. Never noticed the eye width thing though. Have to keep that in mind.
