PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES......discuss
:woohoo:

the drought could be over. Mayor Nutter was smart - he undid all the jinxes that kept us from winning. Hopefully we can wrap this bad boy up tonight.

Oh, jinxes:

#1) Philadelphia hasn't won a championship since the city erected buildings taller than the William Penn statue on top of City Hall. Billy Penn use to be the tallest thing in Philadelphia until 1984 (last national title of any philly team was in 1983). Mayor Nutter had another mini-statue of Billy Penn erected to the top of the new Comcast building.

#2) Philadelphia hasn't won a championship since the city of Phildelphia decided to start dressing up Billy Penn for the playoffs. This year there is no jersey or hat on Billy Penn.

:woohoo:

2. It could be those reasons
or maybe great pitching? That seems to be the difference from what I've seen over the years.

Philadelphia, PA (October 22, 2008) – This past July, the Philadelphia Soul brought to Philadelphia something the city has been thirsting for -- a World Championship. On the brink of the Phillies beginning the World Series tonight against the (AL team), the Soul couldn't be more excited to root for another team to bring home a championship to the City of Brotherly Love....

But who do they think will end up on top at the end of the World Series? "I think the Phillies are hot right now, although (the AL team) is playing well. The way that guys like Shane Victorino are playing and the way pitching is with guys like Cole Hamels, it's great. The Phillies will pull it out," Bogle predicts.

Though there's a debate on whether the Soul really broke the "curse" in Philadelphia, it's evident that winning ways are going to continue on with the City of Brotherly Love and the Soul are rooting for the Phillies the whole way....

The Soul celebrated their fifth anniversary this season with a 59-56 win over the San Jose SaberCats in Virgin Mobile ArenaBowl XXII....

edit: You have incurred the wrath of the great Bon Jovi! Not even Joe Biden can save you now...

5. I think the Soul have been really great for Philly. Changed some thinking,
elevated some spirits.
The Phils have a really fine pitching staff, and to manny hitters to list.
They seem to be a happy team, and really work together.
They have been working up to this for several years - ask the Mets.

I think a lot of the credit goes to uncle Charlie, who has really refined and strengthened this team.
They are going to be hard to beat and great to watch for some time to come.
They will win tonight.

8. Speaking of Hockey
the Mississippi Seawolves in Biloxi are now a Flyer affiliate minor league team. I look forward to the "minor" league rock em sock em at the Gulf Coast Arena.

6. They matched up well against my Rays
It was going to take a very athletic team to beat Tampa, and Philly has proven it. I think Tampa, with their youth, truly spent themselves on their 7 game series against Boston. The youth has finally shown up in this series. However, the future couldn't be brighter for the Rays (no pun intended). Going from worse to the World Series is truly the sport's story of the season.

21. I have a feeling the Rays will be back at least once in the next three years.
I haven't heard anything about a fire sale. A terrific team can only get better.

25. The Rays are just getting started and they made it this far!
Took the Phils a few years to put this team together and get it all working.

Rays have the talent and a great manager, and they are young - they are just getting started.

7. I'm just hoping...
...that people don't go nuts and burn the fucking city down. It's a meaner, uglier world since 1980. When the Phillies won the second game last week, people went berserk. A woman I know told me that she saw some guys trying to overturn a Septa bus on Broad Street. This was after winning only the second game. I really want them to win and I'm more excited this year for some reason than I was in 1993 but I hope folks don't turn the city into Baghdad.

because frankly, as a NY sports fan, I'm sick of hearing Philly fans piss and moan about not being able to win the Big One.

18. You see the Reds in the World Series
I'm still a fan but I'm a fan of Philadelphia and my favorite Hockey, Basketball & Football teams are from Philly. So I'm cheering them on. Thinking of going to Philly tonight.

20. Hope they win it all at home...
tonight would be so sweet -- I hope they can do it in front of
their fans here in Philly! It's almost too good to be true --
they've got the pitcher they want starting, and they're up 3 -
1. Let's hope all the jinxes have ended!

24. i don't like the phillies at all, BUT...
This has been one of the best World Series I can ever remember. I don't really like the Rays either, but two smaller market teams making it this far is incredible. I'm glad to see different teams shaking it up. It has been great for the sport. Can't stand the Yankees, Dodgers, Cubs, Red Sox, White Sox, Mets, et. al.

Plus, maybe the Pirates won't suck next year. Well, I can dream, can't I?

Better leave the champagne in the fridge for one more night at least. I think the Rays will win this one tonight at least. People are counting them out already and they really shouldn't. Not yet.
