My Gramma died tonight.
She was ninety-eight and had been unwell for more than a year. Still, she died suddenly, right after a good dinner spent in the company of friends. Rest in Peace, Aline.

10. If she'd been able, she would have been ballroom dancing
with Grampa, both of them dressed to kill, at the Men's Club where she was born, lived and died. But she loved to socialize and she taught me how to behave in a fine restaurant so you are probably quite right.

30. He was probably sent to fetch her.
You know she probably saw him the way he was on the day they married. And when she got up to meet him, it was perfect. Think of it that way, and you'll get through this so much easier.
The vision that helped me the most when my sister and nephew were killed was my dad showing his grandson around heaven. He had always wanted a grandbaby. He probably drove a few people nuts the day they arrived.
Your grandmother is happy and back with her parents and everyone who went before. She's safe and happy. Hope that helped.

32. I totally believe in that.
I occasionally smell my grandmother. She's usually around when I'm sad. I know I smell lilacs when I'm at my worst, and I know that is her making sure she knows I'm still being watched over.

72. I'm sure she isn't missing him anymore
I'm sure she's with him again in a better place

My grandmother lived up to the age of ninety-nine before she passed away in November 2005, a decade after my grandfather left this earth. They were essentially soul mates and she missed him deeply in the decade following his passing. She would often say to me "Naughty grandpa, going off and leaving me without him". One of the things that gave me great comfort after her passing was that I knew they were together.

It is hard. I'll tell you what's sort of a coincidence, too. Last night I attended the wake of a friend of my boyfriend's family. I had such dreadful feelings seeing the widow, surrounded by people and smiling but with shocked eyes, and I thought of Gramma.

Grandmas are the best, aren't they? I lost both of mine when I was a teenager, and I always felt that my grandmas loved me in ways my parents never did.

You obviously have great memories of your grandma; use those memories to give yourself a smile as you mourn the loss of a wonderful woman who helped mold you into who you are today.

64. I'm so sorry for you, but maybe so much not for her
Sounds like she left this life peacefully, the way most all humans would like to go. My husband's granny went in much the same way. She was perfectly healthy at 98 years old. She had her daily lunch with her friends in their assisted living facility. During lunch she complained of a slight headache, and said she was going back to her apartment to lay down. An hour later the staff called my husband to tell him she was gone.

My great-uncle, the same thing at 98. My cousin didn't want to put his father into a nursing facility, yet Uncle Dewey insisted, as he was very social and he wanted daily interaction with as many people as possible. My cousin drove him to the nursing home with tears running down his cheeks. Uncle Dewey lived there for a couple of years, during which time he took up dancing (he was kinda a ladies man). One day my cousin was visiting him, and Uncle Dewey was showing him the latest dance moves he had learned. The next day the staff called my cousin and told him that my great-uncle had passed peacefully in his sleep sometime during the night.

This past Dec., my FiL died after fighting, scratching and clawing to stay alive for 6 months. There was nothing peaceful about it, and the decisions we had to make about letting him just "go", per hospice care (DNR and withholding hydration and nutrition). I would never wish that scenario on my worst enemy.

I'm happy that your grandma had a good evening in the company of friends, before going onto the next phase of life's journey.

Your Gramma was a beautiful lady, and I'm sure she loved you greatly. I'm sorry for your grief, yet for her, it sounds like she left this life in dignity and peace, for which I'm happy for her.

The grief will take awhile, and maybe will always remain with you. However, I hope you will take joy and delight with happy memories of her.

90. So sorry
But how wonderful that you've had her in your life for so long. And how wonderful that it was sudden after a good day, not painful and lingering. That's how my grandfather died too.

95. Gorgeous.
I would love to see a picture of her as a younger woman.

She sounds a little bit like my grandmother - but she got 22 more years than my grandmother did.

to have lived so long and to have enjoyed life till the very end.

101. May she rest in peace. I hope this little poem helps...
...from Rudolf Marku...

In memory of my Mother

Without a word of warning to anyone
My mother died.

She did not want to bother anyone,
The world had enough problems and worries of its own,
She wandered off, so to speak, on tiptoe.

And since then, I have been more caring of old people,
I give them my seat on the train, on the bus,
Sometimes I feel like taking them into my arms like children.

Even when I don't know them, I talk to them, smile idiotically,
In winter I am afraid they will catch a chill or a cough.
I always avoid the obituaries.

I have no desire to read of her age
Now that I know how to decipher the wrinkles
And to fathom the magic of greying hair.

I have the impression that some day
A letter from afar will fall into my hands
"How are you doing? How are the others?"

Without leaving her address
She continues to wander on tiptoe
Amidst the din of the world, its pain and lamentation.

104. Thank you Robeson.
I believe the spirit of who she was and what she believed always will "wander on tiptoe amidst the din of the world."
