NEWBURYPORT -- The search is widening for a man wearing camouflage and carrying a handgun in the vicinity of Hale Street.

State police and local police, canine units, and a helicopter are conducting an extensive search, which began around 2 p.m. when a man was spotted with a gun at the Crow Lane Landfill. Subsequent reports were made in the area near Hale Street.

Police have been pulling over and questioning motorists who fit the general description of the man.

No facial descriptions have been released yet. The man is reported to walk with a limp.

The search covers a large area, roughly from Interstate 95 to the west, to the Low Street neighborhood in the north to Scotland Road in the southeast. The area includes extensive woodlands, swamps, and fields, as well as an industrial park and some residential neighborhoods.

Police have been going door-to-door, asking for information and warning people that the man is being sought.

18. Police activity is over. I'm home.

Nobody as far as I know was shot. I suspect it was one of the homeless people who were recently uprooted by our town in order to build a walk/bike path down an abandoned rail system just going about his business and looking for a new place to live. That part of the story won't be in the news. It never will.

The schools were finally let out about 4 hours after the normal time to a lot of panicked parents, our office building was 'unsealed', and everything appears to be okay.
