because it's really unclear if it's husband/wife or father/daughter. Grant Wood himself contradicted himself many times over on the subject of the painting...and about the meaning of the painting. His sister (who modeled for the painting) insisted it was father/daughter. Wood never again claimed it wasn't and wouldn't say it was. It's a great art mystery and a fun debate with no "right" answer.

It reminds me of the debate about the meaning of this Jasper Johns:
