What are your favorite comfort foods?
The first cold snap is here and when that happens one's mind is automatically drawn to food.

First things I think about are soups. I have a bunch of leeks at home that I will be turning into potatoe - leek soup (thanks Mr. Quayle!) this weekend. Also, a loaf of NY Times bread for soaking up said soup. Then maybe a meatloaf and garlicky mashed potatoes (thanks again!). I have to eat some greens, maybe green beans? Or some collard greens? Decisions, decisions...

ANYWAY, tell me your favorite comfort foods and do not be afraid to post recipes.

2. I'm big on homemade soup, too - I just made a giant batch of lentil veg ...
I also love mashed potatoes, beef stew and chili.

Oh, and pasta with some sort of creamy, cheesy, garlicky sauce.

3. Depression goulash
My grandmother used to make a fantastic dish from one pound of egg noodles, one pound of ground beef, one onion, and one can of tomato juice.

11. Oh so many to choose from, it's hard to pick a favourite.
Homemade soups, blanquet, bisques, chowders and stews, are a special favourite, especially with a little homebaked bread.

A good roast dinner: garlic roasted chicken with carrots, red potatoes and parsnips...

Baked Ziti with four cheese and crumb topping...

Chived Polenta with artichokes and olives...

13. What is NY Times bread?
My comfort foods are those ethnic food my mom and grandma made: homemade chicken soup, halushki, pierogies, holupkis, etc.

My husband jokes that I like anything made from dough and cabbage. LOL

14. The no-knead bread

I knead a little after letting it rise 20 hours or so. Actually I use a recipe from Vogue(!).

Look up no-knead bread. Good bread is within the reach of all Americans at last!

15. Many.
Edited on Thu Oct-23-08 09:34 AM by Chan790
Anything fatty and pub-food resembling. I particularly have a weakness for fries with cheese and sour cream and salsa and guacamole and jalapenos and black olives.

Oatmeal.

Mac and cheese.

Lebanese turnip pickle.

Hummus.

Homemade pasta with good (ie. not homemade because my sauce recipe sucks) sauce.

Grilled cheese sandwich with tomato soup.

Raisin bran.

A cup of tea.

Chai.

Flatbread pizza.

Good food is a big part of my life. I love to cook...I'd do it professionally if I could do it small scale.

24. Fried Chicken.
I cover the chicken in buttermilk and pour a rub (paprika, cayenne, garlic powder, pepper, onion powder, and poultry seasoning) on it and let the chicken sit in the fridge for about 6 hours. Then I take it out and salt the chicken. I dip the chicken in flour and set the chicken in a mixture of peanut oil and bacon grease at 350 degrees. I forget how long it takes but you'll need to flip it over once.
