Good (and so-bad-they're-good) horror movies for Halloween.
I want suggestions, because I like to watch lots of fun horror flicks around this time of the year.

I've already got a lot of the obvious ones: Halloween, The Shining, Nightmare on Elm Street, etc.

36. Some little unknown gems you might enjoy-
Session 9: the same director who was behind the helm of the "The Machinist", one of the most disturbing films to come along for quite a while.

The Ugly: Well done British horror film.

Shock Wave: Christopher Lee has a small role as a Nazi scientist who creates Nazi Zombie supersoldiers on a remote tropical island. Worth it for the 20 something Karen Allen in bikini scenes alone.

Nightbreed: A often dismissed 80's gem, the makeup and performance by David Croenbergh as a psychotic therapists are highlights.

Monster Squad: Before the PG-13 rating was created and enforced, it's great fun to see a monster movie (top notch creature creation effects by Stan Winston, may he rest in peace) peppered with vulgarities and wanton violence.

Phantasm: One of the best surrealist horror flicks anywhere. The best way to describe it was a review I read for another film: "Has all the logic of a 3AM nightmare". Also, the Tall Man ranks up there with Micheal Meyers and Pinhead in regards to kick ass horror icons.

Hellbound: Hellraiser 2: Nobody does it better than Clive Barker. The Channard cenobite is especially enjoyable.

The Ghoul: A lost Boris Karloff gem, very enjoyable.

Abbot and Costello Meet Frankenstein: A classic. No description is necessary.

14. Les Diaboliques?
More film noir/suspense than horror, but it's got one of the all-time great scary scenes in it, and it's a great movie in general.

I've been meaning to watch Elm Street again. I've been wondering if it will hold up to my no-longer-11-year-old self. I remember it as being a lot more clever and interesting than most of the 80s slasher films.

15. I've become rather fond of Lucio Fulci, for one. "The Beyond" is especially recommended.
Some classic scary ones for me (and I don't scare easily at all) would be "Jacob's Ladder," "The Thing" (Carpenter version), the first "Hellraiser," "Suspiria," and of course, "The Exorcist."

As far as "so-bad-it's-good," you can't go wrong with Herschell Gordon Lewis - "Blood Feast," "The Gore Gore Girls," etc.

And on the other hand, if you're really in the mood to get your head fucked with, I'd suggest something along the lines of "Last House on the Left" or "Cannibal Holocaust," but proceed with caution, as there are certain things you just can't un-see.

On a final note, I saw "The Strangers" the other night, and I liked it quite a bit. A genuinely creepy flick, with the kind of nihilistic "no answers" ending I always appreciate.

I never cared much for the sequels but I've watched the first one over a dozen times. Even by today's special effects standards it has the best werewolf transformation I've ever seen (Eddie in the porno theater). None of that Hulk like computer animation shit, real looking facial features with hair, whiskers and fangs popping out.

27. This year I've been favoring older stuff:
1). Horror of Party Beach

An all-time favorite, fully restored, the uncensored print. The second feature, "Curse of the Living Corpse," features a pre-"Jaws" Roy Scheider.

2). Icons of Horror Collection: Sam Katzman

A rarity...a box set in which all four movies are killer (The Giant Claw / Creature with the Atom Brain / Zombies of Mora Tau / The Werewolf). My personal favorite is "The Werewolf."

3). Fiend Without A Face

Featuring the trippiest "monsters" of all time, flying brains with eyes and spinal cords attached...

4). Queen of Outer Space

Zsa Zsa's big movie, other than "Moulin Rouge." Can you say "I HATE that kveen?"

5). Fox Horror Classics Collection (The Lodger / Hangover Square / The Undying Monster)

Three great movies, with my personal favorite being "The Undying Monster." Beautifully filmed, really gothic and atmospheric, right up there with the old Universal Frankenstein / Dracula / Wolfman movies.

...AND A COUPLE OF NEWER ONES...

6). 28 Days Later

One of the very few "living dead"-type movies outside of George Romero that really nailed the full-blown paranoia tone throughout the entire film. Tense, entertaining. Perfect choice for a Halloween movie.

7). The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003 remake)

Yeah, it's the remake, but it's worth watching for the over-the-top performance from R. Lee Ermey ("Full Metal Jacket"). Also, there's an excellent documentary on the "extras" disc on Ed Gein, the real-life "Butcher of Plainfield" from Wisconsin in the 1950s, the guy who inspired Psycho, T.C.M., and Buffalo Bill.

37. I really like a Polanski movie called "The Ninth Gate", 1999.
Has Johnny Depp, Frank Langella, and a lot of very good Euro actors. Very moody, scarey devil stuff, I have been looking for it this year on TV , may buy it on DVD - it's worth it.

Depp is great, so is Polanski.

61. Yeah, me too
A scary Polanski movie starring Johnny Depp, and based on a really good book should have been awesome, but it was just really lifeless. Oh well, at least it was better than Fearless Vampire Killers (a huge disappointment for me, since I love both Hammer Horror and Polanski's weird sense of humor.)

There's always Repulsion though.
