That one old cat a friend owned, Maynard, was stand-offish until his very last year, then became comfortable being with others...odd one, but handsome. Perhaps he finally gave up taking offense at the name.

18. Ha! The first two are calico and tabby!
Edited on Tue Oct-21-08 02:02 PM by KamaAina
I once had a conversation with the boss (years ago, back East). I had just had a visit with a coworker and her four cats. :loveya: One, Merri (her brother was Pippin :-) ) was a "Talico", like patiod describes above. So I'm describing Merri to the boss -- who replies "What's a calico?" Uh, okay. He did go to prep school in England, after all. Maybe he calls them "torties". And then:

"What's a tabby?"

As the art director put it, "Aren't, like, nine out of ten cats you see tabbies?"

From then on this man, who stands all of 5'6", was affectionately known as "the Little Dunce". :dunce:

edit: The calico is the official cat of the state of Maryland, while Massachusetts' official cat is the tabby. Believe it or not, the Dunce is a Williams grad. So no reunion for him!

Well, almost. I have one Tonkinese (similar to Siamese and Burmese cats) and a Maine Coon mix (she looks like a Maine Coon, but her mother is a solid gray British shorthair). And you're right, both breeds are very intelligent and friendly...but I could be a little biased in my opinion. :)

I'm gonna be pedantic: Some of your options are breeds and some are color patterns. Not the same thing. You can have a calico Manx or a tabby Maine Coon, for example.

53. The one I find at the SPCA with a sad story
and is older. No one adopts those, so I pick them. They are so happy I don't want kittens! The first one I got was about 7 and given up because the owner's GF was moving in and was allergic. I only had her about 3 years before she died, but she had a home for that time. The second was about 10 given up because the owner was terminally ill. He's still with me and I'm still cleaning up his angry piss when I get home late more than 2 days in a row. x(

59. That's how I got my wonderful little guy.
He's a Himalayan mix (fawn-pointed buff and with an unmistakably Siames-y voice). He'd been raised as an indoor kitten, then kicked outside to be an outdoor cat. At least the craven swine responsible for him left him food outside. though he lost all of his left ear and half his right ear to frostbite. He lived outside for about seven years, then the asshats moved away and abandoned him. Fortunately the neighbors called Feline Rescue, a local shelter. The foster had him for over a year and I was the first person to call about him. Well, that reduced me to tears and sealed the deal. We've been together since August 2005.

Here's a link to my first DU post about him, with pic. His name's Max now, and he is loved! http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=105x3784455

76. that's how I ended up with Esther
The shelter I went to had all the cats and kittens running around freely which is great in one respect, but puts the older cats at a disadvantage. Everyone pays attention to the little kittens running around and playing and ignores the calmer cats. Esther is a 5 yr old overweight cat who spent her time sitting around watching the world go by, so I had to take her. Otherwise she'd still be there getting ignored by prospective owners. Now she's got a house to herself and plenty of attention. At the shelter she'd gobble her food right away, perhaps out of fear of it being stolen, now she paces herself and is slowly starting to lose some weight.
