We beat Wal Mart!
Edited on Mon Oct-20-08 10:49 PM by Pithlet
I'm cross posting this from the Tennessee forum because I'm so overjoyed about this. http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=179&topic_id=4377&mesg_id=4377 This was a long, hard battle fought by my community, and there were times when I thought it was hopeless. The location Wal Mart chose was just so ridiculously wrong. It would have been disastrous. The intersection is winding two lane roads both ways, for one thing. Cordova already has enough Wal Marts as it is. I know a lot of communities haven't been as lucky. I'm glad we were able to pull it off. I hope more communities in the future are as successful. Too bad, Wal Mart!

2. They wanted to build one out near here...
would have been DISASTEROUS for all the local businesses. This is an area that's got nothing but farmland and a couple of towns. Half the character and draw of this area is the fact that we DON'T have a Wal-Mart or anything like that nearby. There's still an actual small-town feel around here. And small businesses owned by people who live here. Hell, here on main street most of the shops are the old-fashioned kind that have the show downstairs and an apartment upstairs. Thankfully the local republicans AND democrats banded together and fought to keep 'em out.
