I can finally help Thomcat but
Edited on Mon Oct-20-08 09:22 PM by lizziegrace
I can't find all the parts. I acquired a second-hand Compaq laptop and in the move, the laptop was put into a computer bag but the rest of the parts weren't. I'm missing the power cord and the wireless card. :(

His computer is dead in the water, he's living in a dorm-sized apartment and his power chair is in the shop. The least, the very least I can do is send him that laptop. I've been through everything in the house. I can't find the pieces...

Lelapin, think hard about the boxes you packed. It was in the living room by the computer desk. The parts were in clear bags... U-Haul box, 3 Men and a Truck box, plastic tub? Does anything ring a bell??

1. Anyone work in computer repair or someplace that has boxes of old parts?
The power cord is the most critical. I can send a 25' cable so he can sit somewhere comfortable. A wireless card would be nice (it's an old laptop) but not essential. I'll pay you for them and pay for shipping...

Anyone?

The computer is a Compaq Presario laptop Model 17XL4, Series CM2080

Thanks!!

2. I don't know anything about laptops myself
or if you need a particular power cord for particular brands. But a wireless card or usb adaptor should be easy to get ahold of, any computer store and maybe even office supply store should have it. I'm looking at Circuit City's website, most of 'em are around 35-40 bucks it looks like.

Hmm... I see one for 20 bucks. http://www.circuitcity.com/ssm/Buffalo-Technology-Nfiniti-Wireless-N-Laptop-Adapter-WLICBG300N/sem/rpsm/oid/169198/catOid/-18341/rpem/ccd/productDetail.do

Looks like it's an internal one though, not USB. So you'd have to have somebody who knows how to crack open the laptop and put stuff inside. :)

I'll check tonight. I've got someone else looking too. I wanted to get the computer to him by this weekend so he doesn't go stir crazy...

5. PM me your email
I'll send you an email with his address. His building office (home) won't sign for packages any more. You'll have to send to his office.

I just have the model and series information. Where would I find that? (The machine's at my house. I can look it up when I get home.)

18. I can get one of those for about $40
PM me if you're interested.

Be careful of the universal or really cheap ones, they can fail and/or damage the battery.

17. Could be
I can't remember what the original looked like. They have a toll-free support number. Maybe they can tell you if it will work on a Series CM2080.

20. a message from Thomcat...from one of his house elves!
Hi all...

sorry to bump up an old thread, but DU says I do not have enough posts yet to start a new one.

I am JennaLaw, a friend/house elf of Thom's.

The computer arrived on Friday and he thanks everyone. There is some sort of compatibilty issue between the operating system and the antivirus / firewall he uses (made sense when he explained it, but I am not nearly techie enough to try to retype it here).

Anyway, a friend is coming over after work tomorrow night to try to help him get everything fixed up. So, hopefully there will be direct posts from him again soon.

Thanks again, to everyone who pulled together to help him out.

Jenna
