Tom Snyder should have punched him in the face.

1. D'oh! I was thinking, "what's he done now???"
I've seen this clip a bunch of times over the years, and the older I get, the more I want to punch him in the face too.

He's still pretty obnoxious.

2. The whole idea of acting like you've got some great wisdom
Then NOT being clear about your message....etc.... is really childish and it doesn't really accomplish anything. COuld you imagine if like Ghandi acted like that?

3. In fairness they thought they were rebelling against
the big bloated music business, and the English class system, but in retrospect it's pretty lame.

Sounds like a good college paper. :D

12. Lydon's not "a savior". He's a fucking rock'n'roll singer
Anybody who thinks he's anything more than that is in for a huge diappointment.

6. The guy is selling fucking butter now. No shit.
The Sex Pistols were highly overrated to start with, but damn, this is just sad.

Johnny Rotten: Butter Salesman

If Jello Biafra ever pulls something like this I'm killing myself. :)

9. That's just fucked up
I can understand his wanting to piss on the legacy of the Pistols (that's part of the aesthetic), but that's pathetic

10. Well, considering he looks like some pudgy old guy who ought to be selling butter,
I'm not at all surprised.

I thought the commercial was funny as hell at least.

11. I say good for him
Too many people have been making money off his image for far too long. Why shouldn't he be able to?

He doesn't even have a record label now, and can pretty much say or do whatever he damn well pleases, regardless of who it offends.

If he pisses off a bunch of hipsters, more power to him. If he admits to liking Journey (like he did in his most recent interview with The Big Takeover magazine), more power to him. If he's finally getting paid for what he's done, more power to him.

At the end of the day, he's just a pop star-- NOT "the voice of a generation", NOT "a savior of modern music", just a bloke trying to get paid.

Everybody loves an iconoclast, but nobody wants to pay his rent.

13. Well, one of the reasons I always felt he was over rated...
...was exactly that I never felt he was the voice of a generation that so many think him to be (same goes for Cobain). The Pistols were a second rate punk band that are mostly popular now because of the film Sid and Nancy. Rotten always was a pop star to me.

But, if he needs to pay the rent that bad then why not make some more music? I can promise you that there are labels out there that would gladly put out anything he was involved with. He could make enough to live on, and have some dignity and self respect at the same time. Win win!!

And if he wants to offend whoever he wants, which is fine in and of itself, isn't there plenty of targets out there that would actually be important besides the hipsters? Isn't trashing hipsters the newest hip thing to do these days anyways, making him the ultimate hipster? We have war, torture, poverty, starvation, climate change...and he's trying to piss off the hipsters with a butter ad??!!!1111!

That's aiming lower than McCain picking Palin.

;)

14. I think he's doing the butter ads to get paid
pissing off the hipsters is just a welcome side effect. :)

Offending hipsters is not his intention, but the fact that so many hipsters are offended just proves that they (the hipsters) are a fairly self-important lot who probably need to be taken down a notch, anyway. Besides, offending hipster sensibilities is like shooting fish in a barrel. I do that every weekend by blasting Def Leppard out of my car when I'm driving down the parkway through the hipster part of town.

I doubt any label (besides an indy) would want to touch him now. He's pissed off a fair amount of the record industry over the past few years, and I doubt any of them would be interested in anything he'd create these days (the record industry is even more fickle than it was even a decade ago).

Seriously, if you want to see where he's at these days, pick up the latest issue of the music zine The Big Takeover (www.bigtakeover.com). They've got a lengthly interview with him (part 1 of 2) that's very interesting.
