So the new kitten has arrived
Edited on Sat Oct-18-08 04:01 PM by undisclosedlocation
She is highly ugly and stinky. (I should probably mention that every day is opposite day in our household.) She is a mitted seal-point ragdoll, just under two months of age. Alice was so excited that she ran out of the office without getting directions. I met her halfway out to to BFE where the cattery is. I had scouted it out on the internet and thought I could remember the way (her cell phone was dead or we would have had no worries). My Google maps fu got us within a mile of the place, but my confidence deserted me, so we had to double back about 10 miles. Friendly folks at a new Hyatt Place loaned Alice internet access and a phone, so we set off again this time with directions right back where we'd just come from. The cattery lady was very nice and not the least bit put out about having to wait an extra hour. The kitten was sweet, too. Though not the best traveler, she was better than the late, great Madeline (who always had bodily functions issues when in a car) and possibly better than the great but not late Amelia, who is legendarily keyed up about everything.

Anyway, I think she'll do a good job at helping heal Alice's heartache over the passing of Madeline. She's already proving to be more fun than any number of barrels of monkeys. Amelia is not well pleased, but so far this has only been expressed through a certain quantity of hissing. I shelled out for a feliway infuser, so maybe in the near term she'll be at least a little calmer. (Knock on wood.)

You're probably expecting pictures, aren't you? We haven't actually taken any yet, but have a few from a few weeks ago sent by the lady from the cattery. Her muzzle is already considerably darker. Alice does not appreciate me suggesting that Lily is actually a spotted hyena. I'll add a picture momentarily on edit.

Edit: Silly Lily Vanilli:

My Pippin is just like this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BX-PlMZOV5Q&feature=related floppiest, most trusting cat ever-won't even move for the vacuum cleaner. But he's a Turkish Angora!

We solved the older hissing queen cat problem by getting a second kitty two weeks after we got the first one. That way she has someone approximately her own age to play with and they love each other dearly.

The queen hates them both and I don't think she would ever have adjusted. :hi:

14. We were considering the reverse, getting another adult cat
'though not for that reason. Alice was so sad, she went to PetSmart to visit with the Project Pet kitties and found one she liked after we already had put down a deposit on the kitten. I think I've persuaded her that three cats in a patio home is probably too many, but we left it that we'd get the kitten and see how everybody's getting along after a month, then go see if Wednesday the cat is still available.

Amelia has only been boss cat for a little over a month; she was the underling for the previous 2 1/2 years. She's so kittenish and playful herself that I think she can adjust to having a playmate closer to her size than me. If not, armed neutrality worked between her and Madeline; I'm sure it can work again.

As I type this, there is a kitten sitting on my crotch chittering because Alice won't let her get the little mouse with feathers on a string. Amelia is not well pleased, but rather than hissing she just left.

15. Oh, but you'd miss out
on all the fun of two little ones romping and wrestling and bathing each other and curling up together to sleep. They are so dang cute together that we're constantly entertained by their antics.

Three kitties don't take up much room at all. We live in a tiny house, only about 890 sq. ft.

Good luck achieving detente whichever way you decide to go. :hi:

17. Yeah, I've been trying to explain to Amelia that she ought to be nice to the little one
as she will be bigger than her in a year or so, but Amelia just points out that she's a cat and doesn't speak English and resumes hissing again.

42. My "little" boy
is about 18 pounds of handsomeness. I got him when he was 2 from a PetSmart adoption clinic, his original owner was deployed to Iraq and had to give him up. Ragdolls really do have very sweet dispositions.

and then she falls over backwards trying to get the tassels on a string cat toy, somewhat undercutting her argument.:)
