Has this happened to your dog or cat?
Edited on Fri Oct-17-08 03:38 PM by Feles Mala
My cat was found in the back of our house the other morning unable to move. The vet thinks he was grazed in the back end by a car or someone kicked him. He has no broken bones or organ damage, but he's still can't get up and walk. It's been three days. He definitely has feeling in his legs, but hasn't stood up yet. The doc says swelling and bruising is pushing agains his spinal cord. He said when this subsides, he should be able to walk again. He's getting steroids and has a catheter to empty his urine. Has anyone ever had a cat survive this? How long was the recovery?

1. My Moggy had something similar, fell off a bed wrong when he was about 5 -
Cats don't always land on their feet when they're half-asleep... :( He bruised his back and had ataxia for about a month- his back end couldn't support any weight and he kept falling over. He was fully recovered after about three months, and he's been going fairly strongly for the past 12 years now. Organ damage or spinal damage was one of the things we were worried about, and I had to keep him on a fairly liquid diet not to stress his system until he regained strength. (also a cleanliness issue for the poor boy - he couldn't stand when he needed to...)
He's gotten creaky recently - suspect arthritis - but that's also to be expected now that he's 17 and a half...

If the vet hasn't found any serious damage to the spine or organs, he should start showing some recovery over the next couple weeks. It's heartbreaking to see them struggle through this period.

2. He can't move front and back legs?
Are his claws frayed? That is something veterinarians look for when they suspect a cat was hit by a car, because cats try to dig their claws into the road to avoid getting knocked over.
I would think your vet knows what is probably causing the paralysis, but this article has a list of possible causes:

I hope your cat is on his way back to good health.

3. No, I have never experienced that. I hope he is better soon!
BTW, anyone who would kick a cat is someone I have no use for. I hope he gets well soon, I am sorry he is suffering with this condition.
