Nintendo stops GameCube production
Edited on Sat Aug-09-03 11:16 AM by Kellanved
As I have just seen a Gamecube Thread I remembered this story. Somehow it looks like Nintendo going Sega's way to me. (Saturn/Dreamcast)

"Nintendo is to press the pause button on production of its GameCube consoles while it clears inventory of unsold machines. the company's president said on Thursday. But Satoru Iwata promised the struggling games company was developing a radical new product to be announced next year -- however he gave few details save to say it would be a departure from mainstream gaming consoles 'that will have a big impact on the world.'

1. This hurts.
I've grown-up with them, and I want to retire with them. (My partner calls the GameCube "your boyfriend.")

I remain skeptical. THey've been known to promise "nuclear bombs" and "earthshaking products" and then reveal stuff like.. connectivity with the GameBoy. Wow (sarcasm).

I can't imagine a life without Zelda and Link and Ganon. No. It's like a friend is dying.

I don't care if I sound like a geek. This is depressing.

2. Vaporware?
I felt the same in the late 80s when Atari was dying.

Then in 1994 when Commodore snuffed it.

IBM betrayed me in 1997.

SCO is trying to backstab me in 2003.

That's how it works. :-(

4. heh
Video games have a big impact on the world... isn't that what President Bush is for? Having him as president, it sure as hell seems like he's got the world as a big video game.

6. I wouldn't worry about Nintendo too much...
The company has something in the range of 500 million dollars in the bank, and ZERO DEBT. That something that a massive company like Sony can't even begin to brag about. Nintendo is still nowhere even near the financial predicament that forced Sega out of the console wars. They will definitely survive for well into the forseeable future. But with the rise of cellphone gaming in addition to Sony's entry into the handheld gaming market, they understandably realize the need to make adjustments to their overall business strategy.

You also have to consider the negative impact that the U.S. economy and the global economy in general is having on all markets, video games included. People just don't have the extra cash to splurge on a $50 game these days. I certainly can't remember the last time that I did.
