LeftyKid has informed me that he wants to go to the shark museum. In Australia.
When I patiently explained that flights to Adelaide are not in the budget, he asked me to look for another museum with a shark exhibit. Apparently he'll settle for one not run by a shark attack survivor with cool scars, but I try his patience by demanding such compromises. Much sighing and eye rolling ensued.

So I hit The Google, and whadda ya know, there's a pretty cool looking setup exploring we know about the Carcharodon megalodon, but it's (guess!) in Florida. If trips to Florida were in the budget, I would not be wasting time on fiberglass shark models, and the rugrat would likely not be invited at all.

My son has graciously informed me that camping would be a good backup activity, but he would like to do it on another planet and would prefer one with friendly aliens.

:banghead:

4. He's an odd kid.
He's really into fossils, so I offered to take him to the Natural History Museum (their free day is coming up, and they just reopened after a complete rehaul, so I'm interested to go take a look anyhow.) Now, a giant f'n T Rex skeleton would be enough to interest most kids, but he really wants to go someplace with a lot of shark teeth and other shark-related fossils.

2. That kid drives a hard bargain.

Pretty soon, he's gonna learn to give you an offer, "you can't refuse."

Bet he'd absolutely looooove the Serpentarium down at Cape Fear. I know I do. They also have a nice giant aquarium down there too. It's great. The morays come over, huff up at me, and turn all sorts of different colors before turning back green. They do it every time I go. The Egyptian cobras always dance for me too. It's freaking amazing. Wish we all lived closer. Your kid sounds like he's got great taste in adventure and fun. :D

Recently, they've added a red headed krait. I can't wait until next time I go so I can see it. :bounce: :woohoo:

7. There are sharks at the Monterey Bay Aquarium
and you could probably find somewhere to camp nearby, such as Big Sur.

I encourage kids to learn about nature if they're interested.

And tell him there are MONSTER Great Whites out at the Farallones.

How old is he? I don't think he's old enough to actually go out to the Farallones, and I don't think they see many sharks out there on boat trips anyway, but maybe when he's older?

9. He's seen the ones at Monterey Bay Aquarium
Edited on Sun Oct-12-08 04:26 PM by LeftyMom
They had the big shark exhibit a few years back, and the juvenile white shark on display in the Outer Bay exhibit, so he was there A LOT.

He's really looking for something focused more on shark fossils and preserved teeth. Though I'm sure he'd be very happy with a boat tour of the Farallones. I should look into pricing on that, since November is when the big white sharks show up. (Okay, I just looked at the price, and that's a no.)

12. Those are way more resonable than the ones I was looking at though.
He's big for his age. I could probably pass him for ten by next winter (he'll be eight.)
