Hello from Hilton Head!
I've been here since last Sunday on vacation with my parents (which is more fun than a barrel of monkeys. Not. Why do I still feel like I am 10 years old?). It's very nice here. I especially like the beach. It is completely different than the Gulf Coast. The weather has been okay.

I like HH okay but it is a little too sterile for me. Not wild enough, a little too developed. And too many traffic circles! Anyway I do not have a computer and have deliberately stayed away but thought I would say hello.

1. Go to Pinckney Island
It's a national wildlife refuge between HHI and the mainland. Insanely, spectacularly, wondrously lovely (especially the live oaks) with miles of trails. And, uh, I think tick season is well behind you. http://www.fws.gov/pinckneyisland/

7. I just got back from there.
We hiked about 4 miles but it seemed like it was going to rain so we came back. We saw a flock of wild turkeys and some raccoons and an armadillo.

It is very nice out there.

10. Zippy! Glad you made it, and enjoyed it
and glad to see below that you enjoyed Savannah. Nothing against HHI, mind you, but everything else around there is nicer, by and large.

8. We missed Tybee.
We were going to go there on the way back from Savannah but it was raining pretty hard so we skipped it.

We made it to Beaufort and Hunting Island State Park yesterday. I climbed to the top of the lighthouse.

9. Savannah was nice
We took one of those trolley tours. I would have preferred not to do that (too touristy) but nobody wanted to walk very far. We could get off and on the trolley though, so that was good. I missed a lot I think. Next time I go back I will stay in Savannah.

5. I practically grew up on Hilton Head.
It is a great place. I love the way they have kept the trees; you can hardly see the shopping centers.

But damn, several years ago, all you would see is W stickers.

I sure hope that has changed.

In the meantime, that is a fantastic beach.

It is more wild than you would think.

When I was there, there were still coyotes there...also many deer and of course, alligators.

Have you checked out some of the first black settlements and the Civil War fort that was defended by black troops?

Have you done any research into the roots of those communities? They were not white golfers; the South Carolina low country has a history all its own.

6. I have seen some Obama stickers.
I don't know of those were local or visitors, though. We have an alligator living in the pond behind the condo. I will post pictures when I can.

15. No. We're just visiting on the Shipyard Plantation.
It appears that someone has been feeding this alligator since he (she?) made a beeline for us when he saw us out there and just hung around, clearly hoping for a handout..

13. There's a museum there on the Island...nice visit for Island Culture...if you like history...
Can't think of the name of it...but you can GOOGLE. Also a nice tour of the graveyards from Civil War times down there on the water. Nice picture taking. It's near the museum.

14. Are you in that Drug Store that sell's "Computer Time" ...along with expired toiletries?
Edited on Fri Oct-10-08 08:29 PM by KoKo01
The guy who runs it is a "trip" and must make lots of money charging us Internet Freaks per hour. I think he's in Coligney Square...where the "action is" and shopping. Down from
"Ship Watch"...if you are staying there. We like "Ship Watch" but the beach is better at "Palmetto Dunes."
