So how long does a hangover have to last before I can safely
conclude that maybe it's an actual illness? Because if my hangovers are going to last 24 hours every time I go out, I may have to rethink my drinking companions...

6. The clearer the liquor, the less severe your hangover will be.
If you're hell-bent on intoxication, drink vodka. It always works for me. Perhaps it would be best to avoid intoxication, but that strategy has never appealed to me either. I just do all I can to get through the morning-after as quickly as possible.

9. Water, More Water
Drink a four quarts of water before noon and it will help.

Drink water until you are about to pop before you go out to party, and it will help too.

Don't drink, best cure for a hangover I have ever found.

7. I'm glad I don't drink like that anymore
I might have 2 or 3 beers on a Saturday afternoon, but that's about it for me. I feel a lot better for it and I don't waste half of my weekend recovering.

8. As someone who has drank heavily for about 10 years (vodka), the worst hangovers I've had
Are ones where my head feels like it is full of sawdust, light hurts, and my ears ring.. very loudly. Those pass by about noon. The only time a hangover lasts longer than that is if I drink heavily twice on the same day. I have done that a handful of times in the past 10 years, but won't do it anymore... those hangovers are epic.. and drinking that much in one day is just dumb.

10. It could be a few things or all of them at once
1. You hit the age/recovery from drinking wall. It is a sad time but one that happens.

2. You drank too much and didn't eat anything that would absorb it.

3. SHOTS - You drank shots named really ridiculous names. Surfer on acid, fried green tomatoes.

4. All of thee above.

I am 47 and I occasionally do items 1 2 and 3. And I approve this message.

11. My very worst hangover, as I recall, was after a FINE night
with the telephone to a sister in one hand and a bottle of ouzo in the other. I was in my mid thirties. The entire next day I thought I was going to die and I wished to die! but the morning after that I was fine. If it goes past 24 hours you may actually be sick. It's true: you should stick to vodka and something not too sweet or not sweet at all, and you shouldn't mix drinks. Sorry you feel like crap: it'll pass! & for now, just baby yourself.

13. Try candied ginger. I used to work in a health store as a young adult and
that is what our boses used to make us take the few times I arrived for work hung over. It really works. Clears a hangover up in 1/2 an hour.

If you're going to have a hangover anyway, make it a quality one!

19. If you have really severe, long lasting hangovers,
get your blood tested - you could be diabetic.

IIRC, the longest, nastiest hangover I ever had was the result of drinking Irish Coffees made with homemade whipped cream and double shots of Jamison's. I had about 8 of them, and was AWAKE all fucking night and most of the following day.(This was nearly 30 years ago.)

They were delicious.
