Today's College Football Thread
Like last week, the upsets started early this week, with 10th-ranked South Florida losing to Pittsburgh on Thursday. There were plenty of upsets last Saturday, too, and perhaps the trend will continue today.

There are three games between ranked teams: #13 Auburn plays #19 Vanderbilt (4-0 and on looking for their first winning season since Reagan’s first recession), #23 Oregon plays at #9 USC (they’re the only two ranked teams in the PAC 10 right now), and #14 Ohio State plays at #18 Wisconsin.

Some other interesting conference matchups: Missouri has their first real test of the season, playing at Nebraska; #6 Penn State, with their highest ranking since 2005, could have a letdown at Purdue b/w last week’s win over then-ranked Illinois and next week’s game against Wisconsin; and after last week’s big win against Georgia, #2 Alabama hosts undefeated Kentucky.

As for my team—the #1 ranked (you saw that, right petersond ;)) Oklahoma Sooners play the Baylor Bears, who have never beaten OU in 17 tries. Baylor has had more success this season than in recent years, and there is a first time for everything, I suppose, but they have their work cut out for them today.

The Fighting Illini travel to Michigan today, looking for their first win against the Wolverines since Palin’s first term as mayor of Wasilla.

So who is your team playing, and what games are you looking forward to today?

1. Maryland vs. Virginia tonight
They SHOULD be able to beat Virginia (who got blown out by DUKE! last week). But odd things happen to the Terps when they play the Cavaliers....

3. Odd things seem to happen no matter who the Terps play this year
barely beat Delaware, lose to middle tennesee, but then beat California and Clemson  ... now they'll probably crack the top 25 if they beat Virginia. :toast:

5. A&M v. Okie State today.
Take the over. Neither team plays much defense. I think OSU wins by a couple touchdowns. It might be a fun game to watch though. I'm in California this weekend, so I think I will miss it.

There are two college football games here in LA today. I thought about going to one of them, but I don't think I will make it.

6. Go Aggies
The Texas A&M variety, that is :)

Neither team plays much defense.
Not terribly unusual for OSU, but sure is strange to see A&M without a stout D ...

7. Eh, Coach Fran (may he roast) left the cupboards pretty bare.
We ran a 4-2-5 the past few years, so we're thin at LB. Then, we're just pretty young, slow and are adjusting to the new system. I think we'll get better as the year goes on, but honestly, I think we need to wait until next year to be decent.

8. My team, Missouri, plays Nebraska as you said, but...
I don't think they'll prove much of a test. My second-favorite team, Florida, is already underway against Arkansas, and they're up 7-0. :woohoo:

One never knows, of course, but Mizzou has looked impressive whereas Nebraska ... not so much.

10. I think Missouri will win fairly handily
Edited on Sat Oct-04-08 12:07 PM by fishwax
I think I saw the line at 11 points, and I think Missouri will definitely cover that. It would be a big deal to get a win in Lincoln, though.

As for Arkansas, surely Florida will handle them easily. But next week's game against LSU will be a good one :)

I still can't figure out why the even wanted to be in the league other than the immediate prospect of money.

OnEdit: I don't think this is gonna be one of the upset games this week.

Kansas on the other hand seems to be having some problems.

14. yeah, this one is getting ugly
21-0 and still in the first quarter. It's not like I was worried about this game, but I didn't think OU would be up three touchdowns (and just got the ball back, so it could be four before long) in the first quarter. :wow:

he should have to come in for Sam sometime this year like he did against Tech last year.

And also to get the starters some unexpected rest for Texas next week :woohoo::toast:

Elsewhere: Iowa State just scored again--20-0.

26. I hate to say it but it's fun to bet against my Canes
Particularly at home. Dolphin Stadium is a joke. I can't believe the oddsmakers continue to allot full home field value for that sterile dump. They may start to wise up after today. Miami opened -3, which I grabbed immediately on FSU, then today the line plummeted to -1 and pick 'em. One major joint closed FSU -1.

And so shocking that option Ga Tech covered again, easily over Duke. Sports betting would be simple if triple option teams were still in abundance.

Oklahoma is 5-0 ATS this year :) Still haven't gotten the chance to see GA Tech's option attack, other than highlights, though.

Any thoughts on the USC-Oregon game coming up?

My initial impression was the 16 point spread was too high, but USC might be able to score fairly easily.

Yeah, I had Oklahoma today. This is my first very good day of the season. So far. :)

if they don't watch it. They've already had 3 in the first quarter (and the quarter isn't even over yet).

The score right now is 7-3, Oregon. (Woohoo!)

31. Too bad we never took the lead
Major chance after that muffed snap on the FSU punt. Settling for a FG there after 1st and goal never put the pressure on FSU to come from behind in the rain.

I wish the Canes would default to their heritage -- classic pro style offense and attacking 4-3 defense. Nix's gimmick plays make me ill, and Young's defensive line splits are so wide they allow natural gaping holes with only LBs to fill them.

32. Hi fishwax!
I wish I would have caught this thread earlier. Can you believe I haven't made it through an entire Sooners game yet this year? The routs are just not fun to watch. I am a bad, bad Sooner. :(

I guess I need to look at it a different way--I really should just sit down and enjoy the talent. From the little I've seen and what I've read (along with that #1 ranking), looks like a hell of a team this year. YAY!

I'm still not going to even THINK about you-know-what, though.

I'm suiting up and playing QB for Arkansas next week.

I don't care that I haven't played a down in 20-something years, and that I was a center/defensive end in high school. I can still do a better job than Casey friggin' Dick.

39. That's usually our only consolation!
We dodged a bullet this year.

But jayzus, we barely beat a couple of directional schools, and we're getting mauled on a weekly basis. Petrino is going to be on the phone to the Falcons asking if he can have his old job back.

They do have a reputation for not being so hot coming off a big game.

Their defense looked great though. I think the offense never got on the plane when they were leaving Georgia!
