My DU friends: does your family share your political views?
As far as I know, I'm the only left-leaning member of my family. I have a pretty big family -- four sisters and scores of nieces and nephews -- and I don't think anyone else in the family would consider themselves liberal nor do they support liberal causes.

I don't know how I ended up this way...I started out as a Republican (being in the military, natch) but over the years have become more liberal.

My wife also is liberal (she's very liberal socially, much more than I), and most of her family are conservative. Her mother and grandmother are very liberal, luckily.

I don't even tell my family about my web site. I think if they saw it they'd disown me.

2. My grandparents are registered Republicans
Which is weird because they have two gay children (out of 9). Besides that my family is chock full o democrats as far as I know.

3. Yes and no.
We're all liberal, but my dad was pretty apolitical, my mom is a lot like me, and my bro is more conservative, but still slightly left of center

4. I come from a relatively apolitical family
They vote in the presidential elections, but that's about it. They are not loyal to any party so I guess you could say they are independants. They vote for who they think will be best for the job.

Just by their behavior I'd say that they fit the mold of a centrist Democrat. If they were following the primary race they would have probably liked Dean.

5. Ragin' Republicans, every one of them
Because of all the hate speech all over the airwaves, I don't even feel I can discuss politics with my family any more. They're all dittoheads and social conservatives. <sigh> I'm WAY, WAY left... makes me an outcast among them. My only recourse, usually, is when my mom starts in on me about democrats, I say, "I'm a democrat, Mom. Do you think I'm like that?"

8. My 97 year old Grandmother seethes with fury over Bush
But she hates all Republicans, a lifelong Blue Collar Democrat. In 1996, she told me that she had never seen the country seem like a better place than it was then. My Late Grandmother was solid Republican mostly because she worked as a nurse in Gary, Indiana in the 60s, and thought the Republicans were better on reducing crime. Both Grandfathers were Union Steel Workers and solid Democrats. My Mom votes for whomever she thinks would be a more pleasant Luncheon Companion. My Dad is Democrat, Retired Military, Navy Captain, thinks the Republicans are full of shit because they certainly don't mind government spending in THEIR neighborhood. I have four brothers, one of whom is a racist redneck (we caught him putting on make up once, he was 13, I think he would be a happy gay man) another votes depending on what he can figure out and then I have twin brothers that will be voting for the first time this year. My wife votes Democrat mostly, if there were a Quaker party, she would vote for that, she believes in the power of loving kindness.

10. Most of our family are Republicans
My sister and her husband though are firmly liberal.

I am proud to say that my daughter who is 7 is definitely ABB. She brought home a weekly reader from school for Presidents day and the big picture of * on the front of it had a large scribble over *'s face. I thought it was great.

Since we live in a very Republican and Military community I did tell her not to be surprised if other people don't share her views. Then I had to explain to her that her grandparents like Bush - you should have seen the disappointment and confusion on her face. All she could say was "why?!" - I didn't know what to tell her so I said they chose to remain uninformed about what a bad President he is.

It is tricky teaching your child to have respect for the office of the President and the history of our great country at the same time as you are explaining that this time our country has mad a HUGE mistake.

14. My family has a sort of class-based instinctive distrust of Republicans,
which hasn't always prevented them from voting in that direction. My
military sister, for instance, was a big McCain supporter. My mother was
definitely a classic liberal from a family of teachers, and had a major
influence on my politics.

My sister and I are the most liberal. We have cousins who are ardent Republicans, but we try to love them anyway. It's not easy.

20. My mother's side is all Communist, my father's side is all left/liberal.
Edited on Fri Feb-27-04 12:15 AM by northwest
Yes, my entire mother's side of the family (except for a deceased right-wing black sheep great-aunt) is extreme left-wing Communist. One of my countkess great-uncles was Gus Hall. Another great-uncle fought for the Communists in the Spanish Civil War. He died in battle. There's a statue of him in Hibbing, MN.

I'm probably more near the center than any other member of my family, even though I'm still within the left 30 percent of the political spectrum.
