Northwestern University and University of South Florida....WTF?

Northwestern University is in Chicago. You know, Chicago, a good 2,000 miles or so from the Pacific Ocean. Chicago isn't even in the Northwestern part of Illinois, and yet a university is claiming it is representative of the great Northwest?

And University of South Florida....in Tampa. 5 hours from Miami and the rest of South Florida. Perhaps University of South of Gainesville Florida, but hardly University of South Florida.

For that matter, Washington University in St. Louis (site of yesterday's debate). What gives? Is it in Washington DC? Is it in Washington State? Did George Washington ever in his lifetime pal around in St. Louis?

(And yes, I know a simple wiki search will reveal the rationalization behind these names. But I still think on first glance they are humorous in their deceptiveness....)

2. As a University of South Florida alum, I can answer mine.

We needed an appropriate acronym for University of Sun and Fun. University of Central Florida Gulf Coast just sounds dumb.
