Anyone want a Springer mix?
That little fucker jumped on the table yesterday while we were outside and ate our dinner! x(

How can we stop him doing this?

He's a dog.

2. that about sums it up

my cats never have jumped up to get food off my table, but even so, I'd never leave the food on the table and then leave the room.

3. Seconded
My girl has a fantastic "leave it", but leaving her roaming alone in a house with a full meal set out is just *begging* for disobedience (and then diarrhea, she's allergic to a lot of stuff).

4. He can open the doors to the house
Aside from locking him in his crate, it's pretty hard to control where he goes.

6. Why wasn't he outside with you?
Or, if that wasn't an option, why didn't you put your food in a safe place that he can't reach? Seriously, he's a dog, & despite the fact that he's domesticated, he still has a primal urge to seek food & eat it.

8. When he's outside with us he just goes back in the house
and we left him inside so our other dog could eat her dinner. :(

while the other is outside with the other dog.

15. That's what I thought! LOL!
This dog only ate food that was sitting out? Didn't open a cabinet to see what else was around? And you call that a dog?!!

7. I was hosting an overnight at my parents house
and one of my guests made a platter full of breakfast burritos. She turned her back for a minute and my Mother's dogs gulped them down in no time flat. We were stuck eating cold cereal that morning.

12. Anybody want a big orange cat?
Milo (fifteen pounds of blubber and fur) just hopped up on the table and snatched a slice of roast turkey breast right off my plate. At least your dog waits until you are out of the room. Milo steals food right in front of me.

17. Our (late) unknown mix ate an entire 3 pound pan
of homemade lasagna while we were outside thanking the neighbor who gave it to us. The dog had never been on the table before, and it didn't occur to us that she would go after it.

20. We crate our Golden during dinner.
Ostensibly, this is because keeping him crated and feeding him *after* we're done eating helps to reinforce the pack "pecking order" and keeps him from getting possessive about his food.

The real reason is because the big fluffy dope gulped down an entire sirloin roast that I'd left on the cutting board while tending to one of the myriad of OktoberKid boo-boos that happen while he's playing outside. When I got done washing and applying the band-aid, the roast was loooong gone, and the dog was hiding behind the couch.

We had vegetable stew instead of beef stew that night, as you can imagine. Arrrggh!

21. Gotta love goldens that way
My father still talks about our goldie who ate a platter of fried chicken while my mother ran next door to borrow something from my grandmother. Same dog also ate a bag of Easter candy that was hidden in the back of their closet (he opened the sliding door on the closet to get to it).

We have to keep an eye on Mr. Tristan for this reason as well. So far his best snag was a stick of butter left on the counter.

When he woke, the package and all was gone -- never to be seen again. :o

24. spoiled!
make him do a down stay and watch you eat, then watch the other dog eat. put the food bowl out, make him wait until you give the command. convince him that all the food on the planet belongs to you. (cesar taught me this.)
the dogs i have now wouldn't touch food unless i left them alone with it for a couple of hours. i have had dogs that couldn't be left for 10 seconds, tho, so i understand.
