1. CRT or TFT?
If it's a CRT, probably a dry solder joint in the horizontal scan circuits somewhere.

4. Given how cheap CRT monitors are nowadays
probably throw it out and get a new one. I doubt it will be economic to fix.

3. My LCD monitor goes wonky every now and then
A solid whack to the side brings it back to normal. Dry solder joints can be a problem with either technology.

5. Quite true.
I was just thinking that the high pitched hum might be to do with the electron scan, which TFT screens do not have to do (they don't scan).

8. Dunno yet
Don't even know who all's gonna be in the division series. In the NL, so far it's the Dodgers and the Cubs. If the Phillies beat Washington this afternoon (they're ahead 3-1 in the sixth), they'll clinch the East, but the wild card will still be up for grabs between the Mets and Milwaukee. LET'S GO METS!

In the Republican League, the Angels and Tampa Bay have won their divisions and the Red Pox clinched the wild card. Minnesota leads the White Sox by half a game in the Central. (Minnesota's leading Kansas City 2-1 right now and the Sox and Cleveland start in an hour and a half.) The Central could very well be decided by an if-necessary game on Monday if it's close enough for the Sox to have to make up a rainout against Detroit. GO, TWINKIES!

In short, it's down to the wire. :bounce:
