Domestic dispute -- who is right?
My SO has a very irritating habit of pushing the sides of a 2 liter pop bottle in before replacing the cap. He claims that this lets the air out that could make the pop go flat.

I, on the other hand, make sure the bottle is perfectly rounded before I close it and screw the cap on as tight as possible to not let any air escape at all; my theory being this keeps the carbonation fresh.

When a bottle *I* have closed is reopened there is the pfffsssstt you hear when you open a new bottle. When a bottle *he* has closed is reopened there is a just a sad little sss if anything. But he still claims that his way is correct.

Which is it?

1. It isn't a matter of right and wrong, it's a matter of where your priorities lie.
What's more important, making sure it fits into the fridge right and doesn't get all bent and weird, or trying to preserve a tiny bit of the CO2 in there?

Personally, I'd go on your side. But that's just me. :)

2. You are right. Your SO has issues.
Squeezing the sides of the 2-liter bottle...who ever heard of such a thing?

3. It goes flat either way.
That being the case, it's definitely not worth any kind of dispute :P

4. While we're on the subject
my daughter takes the bottle, caps it and then shakes it up before she puts it in the refrigerator. Claims it stays carbonated longer that way...

Doesn't make sense to me...

7. He's scientifically correct.
The reason you hear the psssht on your bottles is because your method allows CO2 to escape from the liquid.

The reason you don't hear it on his is because very little CO2 is able to escape from the liquid.

That psssssht sound you seem to love so much is the sound of your soda going flatter.

8. He's right. It's about partial pressure.
The partial pressure of a gas in a mixture is equal to the overall pressure multiplied by the proportion of the gas present in the mixture.

I.e. if the proportion of CO2 in the air in the bottle was 1/4 and the pressure was 1 atmosphere, the partial pressure of the CO2 would be 1/4 atmospheres.

The CO2 will escape from the soda until the partial pressure of the CO2 in the air in the bottle prevents any more from escaping. The smaller the space in the bottle, the quicker the partial pressure of the CO2 will increase. Therefore your husband is right.

25. I wear a size 5 ring, my sis wears a 3.75 ring.
If I weren't fat I'd probably have a ring size close to hers, she and I wear the same shoe size except I have to have wides.

I can scale an octave, barely.

People laugh, but I type better on a laptop keyboard.

22. ... You're right, honey....
at least, that's what my hubby says so that we can have peace. I don't care about the scientific reasons whether you may be right or wrong, or intellectualizing the pressure of soda, you just win!

....Uhm, at least that's how we have peace in our house, my hubby's pretty smart, don't you think?
