Wheeeeeee.

I went to Pilates this morning and I've been cleaning ever since. A friend's daughter is spending the night tonight, so I got everyone to get their crap cleaned up. I was cleaning the office and decided to take a break.

29. Listening to the Mets and Fish
And wishing Rev. Smitty were here so we could talk about it and put curses on the Phillies and Boozers.

O' course, if the Phillies curse works, we won't need one on the Boozers.

(You know the Brits invented baseball, right?)

38. There's incontrovertible evidence
A kids' book called "A Pretty Little Pocket-Book," published in Britain in... I think 1787. It noted that 'B' is for "baseball" and had a picture of kids playing a game that resembled it.

It's been pretty well established for quite awhile that the British game rounders evolved into town ball in the U.S., and town ball was baseball's precursor.

That whole bit about Abner Doubleday drawing the modern baseball diamond in the dirt at Cooperstown, NY in 1839 was disproven a long time ago. Doubleday wasn't even in Cooperstown at the time, but at West Point. Yet, the legend persists.

39. I used to play rounders at school
but I never thought about whether it was a copy of baseball or a precursor to it, though it was obvious even to me that they were similar.

When we got a bit older we swapped the game for another called softball, which seemed basically the same except with a longer bat.

41. Softball's huge here
There're slow-pitch rec leagues everywhere, many of them co-ed.

I covered a lot of women's softball at the high-school level when I was a sportswriter. The speed some of those girls can pitch is frightening. :scared: One who's considered by many the best pitcher in college history, Monica Abbott, is from my home town.

This isn't her; this is Jenny Finch, another of the great college pitchers. No, I'm not kidding. :D

Oh, I looked up that other thing. It was "A Little Pretty Pocket-Book" and it was published in 1744.
