Bostonions: A question
Does "southie" still exist? Is it still welfare housing?

Just curious, I am reading a facinating book on student busing that went down in the 60's.

1. Yes, and
yes and no, depending. About 1/3 "welfare housing", the rest insanely expensive. Sniffa works in the area, at the moment.

3. Really...
It's such a wild story... apparently "southie" was a very big welfare area back in the day.

Thanks for your reply, kinda helps me with the story a bit.

8. Newton has always been expensive - now comparative to Southie and other parts of Boston
Expensive Southie started back in the mid to late 90's as it did in JP and a few other areas, mainly (to be quite honest) because of the gentrification via gay couples buying up properties. When I was a teen, no one wanted to live in Southie, and you could have bought or rented there for a song.

That being said, so much of Southie (at LEAST a third, but it seems much, much more as I've been working there every day for months) is dirt poor, and if they're lucky, have Section 8 Housing. The homeless are more visible there than some of the other really poor areas I've worked in this summer.

4. I'm sorry..
I am not sure what they are called.

We call ourselves "austinites" I wasn't clear on Boston city dwellers.

No harm intended.

5. I'm just being a spelling fascist
it's "Bostonians" with an 'a'. Ordinarily, I refrain from putting on the spelling jackboots, but since "onions" was embedded in it, I just couldn't resist.

It's not like I ever even was a "Bostonion"; I grew up in Connecticut, also known as "Massachusetts Jr."

6. Bostonians. You were close.
And you gave Kama Aina an opportunity to be a smart-ass. It's win-win!!
