Hand soap question
I have become a compulsive hand washer. It's really bad when I'm in the kitchen cooking. Last winter, the skin on my hands got really dry and thin looking. Does anyone use or know of a good moisturizing hand soap? I would like to get a jump on taking care of my hands before winter hits. It's better to try to prevent it than to battle it after the fact.

Thanks!

:hi:

1. I use Avalon Organics lavender liquid soap.
Not drying, and the lavender oil is a natural anti-bacterial.

5. Niiice.
Anti bacterial is a plus.

I really don't know when I became so freaky about washing my hands. I used to never care if I washed my hands. Now I'm sure I just touched something that is germ-y.

2. My dear VenusRising!
I use Dove soap...

I wash my hands a lot too, and it seems to be pretty good at not drying my skin out...

8. Have you tried the Dove Cashmere soap?
I'm thinking that may be the first one I try.

It's a foam, and I LOVE that!

3. Probably better to just keep a quality, ungreasy moisturizer next to the soap.
Wash, then moisturize.

I'm so manly. :eyes:

10. I tried that last year.
It just made me want to rewash my hands.

I think I need to be reprogrammed.

11. Dove makes a nice one,.
They have it in one of the bathrooms at work. It really makes my hands feel soft, as if I had put lotion on them. It's a green bottle.

If you wash your hands a lot like I do, put a super hand cream on at night. I like Goldbond Ultimate Healing. Comes in a tube and a larger pump bottle.

13. Cetaphil hand soap
I have skin allergies, and Cetaphil -- or a generic store equivalent -- is the only soap I can use. CVA, Rite Air and Kmart all sell generic versions for far less than the name brand.

14. My dermatologist said to avoid the anti-bacterial soaps.
He recommended Dove, also.

18. don't know about soap...
...but I found a wonderful lotion. It's lubriderm's nourishing oatmeal extracts lotion. It smells great -- a bit woodsy and natural. It feels so natural and replenishing on the skin. I love it.

20. The only problem with lotion is that it makes me want to wash my hands again.
It's a vicious cycle I tell you!

Or a conspiracy. :tinfoilhat:

23. Sounds like you've been going through some things.
I wish I knew more about charts. I only know a little, and it's not enough to be helpful. It looks like you got some wise words from some great DUers. I hope that their insight and yours helps you through. My PM box is always open if you need an ear.

24. Try a gentler soap.
Hit up a natural products type store and get an actual soap rather than a detergent, if you haven't already. For bar soap Kirks is good, and for liquids there's always the venerable (and strangely packaged) Dr. Bronners. If you want to go extra gentle, there are a few products marketed for babies that are really great at cleansing without stripping the skin of natural oils- my favorites are Magick Botanicals and the Dr Bronners baby soap.

If your hands need heavy duty moisturizing, the best thing to do is to get thin cotton gloves to wear to bed, and put them on after applying some coconut oil.
