Why are people dissin' my Christian beliefs all of a sudden?
Is it because of that "Passion" movie? Is it because of a few RW assholes who make all of us Christians look bad?

Can someone please give me answers?

I have been reading this stuff for two days, and it appears to me that it's open season on Christians and Christianity.

I'm not an "alert button" kind of person though. I have kept my silence.

Hell...I believe and that's all. I don't read the Bible. I don't go to church. I don't do any of that other crap that everyone expects us Christians to do.

I just want people to show a little respect for my religion and religious beliefs instead of cutting it down all the time.

103. Then YOU Should Go Talk To Those Bad Apples
And tell them to quit giving you a bad name. I'm not going to talk to that ilk. They can all go live in a cave somewhere for all i care.

I don't want to hear them, see them, and i certainly don't want them having any special political sway. But, right now, they do. It's not acceptable.

It's not about christianity. It's about charlatanism and people like that having an extra political voice. That's what angers me.

If you don't like people like me being angry about it, and it's because of a few right wing bad apples, then it should be your duty to go tell them to shut up. They're not making me look bad. They're making me sick.

66. Freedom of/from religion
I feel that freedom of religion includes freedom from religion, in the sense that laws should not be based on religious dogma.

I don't have a problem with people proselytising on a street corner, or expressing their views any other reasonable way, so long as they respect my right not to listen.

I am an active Catholic. I teach CCD on Sunday morning. I know very well what I believe. Frankly I have a very healthy dislike of fundamentalist protestant so-called "christians" who choose to ignore the Beatitudes and perform idol worship for anything with the 10 Commandments written on it and like attitudes.

50. But the Bible is a bunch of myths.
Creation was a myth, obviously.

Noah's ark was a myth, and clearly derived from older mesopotamian myths.

Moses parting the red sea is a myth.

It's possible that Moses leading the slaves out of Egypt is a myth, as there is no Egyptian historical account.

Jonah and the Whale is a myth.

The Tower of Babel is a myth.

Jesus healing the lepers and walking on water is a myth.

Sounds like a book of fairy tales and bedtime stories to me.

Now as for: "Jesus was a propagandist," I don't agree with that or understand the context in which it was said. But it's a perfectly valid opinion. I or anybody else can say what they want to about Jesus. It's not like christians have a patent and copyright out on Jesus. He's in the public domain.

"Holy Rollers are destroying the earth." I agree. We've got Bush denying civil rights and bombing the shit out of the world. We've got Osama bin Laden. Pat Robertson's got diamond mines and machete weilding killers.

Frankly, none of this is an attack on you, and if you can't stand people disagreeing with you, maybe you should go back to your inner chamber to pray.

62. I was raised Catholic
As I got older I bit from the 'tree of knowledge' - so be it. I have no problem with religious people.
My best friend is a methodist. They are mellow, and keep their religion in their hearts.
My mother is a pharisee ie: wears her religion as a shroud, and attempts to convert everyone into her evangelical church/temple (it's a Jews for Jesus thing).
Jesus did not put up with pharisees
I have had many people offer me tracts and books in an attempt to convert me. One of these days I will print up a leaflet to hand to these people in an attempt to convert them to Atheism.

As for 'Holy rollers are destroying the earth' - Yes, many of them are. These 'born again' oil tycoons are making billions off of 'fossil fuels' that would not exist unless dinosaurs existed millions of years ago, yet they believe the earth is only 6000 years old!!?

The Armageddon lobby is entrenched, and quite scary

69. about the bible being a myth
do you consider statements from other religions myths:

have you heard about the ramayana and the mahabharata? do you consider these text epics or the truth...

how about the Koran..gods word or human word? how do you feel about this?

to those of us who are not religious or belong to a different religion the bible is not god's words . thats just a product of having different gods.

85. But isn't it a basic christian belief
that those other people are evil and their going to be punished forever in the afterlife because they believed those myths?

86. look i sympatize with you
but ask yourself this "do you really believe the Koran is gods word"

if the answer is no, then why do you expect us to believe in the Bible...to some the bible is gods words to others its not

both should have the freedom to express them so long as it is civil

90. You may be missing a point here - myths are valuable,
they hold our cultural memories, give us guidance, admonitions, the whole lot. And there's almost always something factual at the bottom. Look at the Homer tales, or King Arthur, or even Gilgamesh. The Korean Tangun story is a little too weird, but most of the myths are worth keeping, worth telling around fires to the youngsters by the oldsters, worth understanding. The word should not be taken, although it is often, to mean 'worthless pack of lies'. But - we non-bible followers have problems with the bible-followers' claims that their mythology is true in detail and superior to other myths. Does that make sense? Does it still strike you as offensive?

70. But at least nobody's promoting a MOVIE about those statements...
ARE they?

You don't like people "dissing" your beliefs.
I don't like people telling me I'm going to spend an un-proven "eternity" in a mythical place called "Hell" because of my LACK of beliefs.

Oh, well, sucks to be us, doesn't it?

Have you ever read Carl Sagan's "The Demon-Haunted World", and if not, why not? I have read your Bible, indeed I studied it.

If your faith is strong, you have nothing to fear of either Sagan, me or the rest of the Sceptics in this world.

Like good Christian Armand does!

Quote: I don't read the Bible. I don't go to church. I don't do any of that other crap that everyone expects us Christians to do.

Seems Armand might offend some Christians with his comment that calls bible-reading and church-going "crap"...

Can't even stay in character...

no one is openly saying that you should follow atheism but just pointing out why they do not think the bible is literally true?

i personally do not think any religious text is literally gods words. but you have the right to believe otherwise and state that as well

I Smell Hypocrisy
From those who want the atheists to shut up and keep it to themselves, yet they feel compelled to witness and convert and judge others. Better yet, they try to incorporate Biblical Law into US Law.

Hypocrisy is not pretty.

26. I'm a Christian and I don't see it like that
I think they are dissing fundies which I highly doubt that you are. I don't think Jesus would be keen about a movie that is as graphically violent as what was described by those who have seen "The Passion" He also wouldn't be too happy about us blaming anyone for his death, I mean the guy was suppose to die on that day I don't think it matter who did it. You can't blame Jews or Romans - blame God, he put Jesus in that position in the first place

night and day. In the Lounge you have people intelligent enough to carry on a civilized discussion. The G.D. is full of a bunch of rabid dogs ready to tear up anything that doesn't fit in their tightly defined world.

However, I have been so rude to and about fundies, anti-choicers, and anti Gay marriage rights folks, that some people here may have mistaken me for an athiest.

97. I don't see
a difference in what Christians do and what political activist do. i mean door to door, phone calls, influence policy, force their idea of what is best on everyone else.I know their "forced ideas" are quite different but still I think their tactics are similar.I don't see anything wrong w/ either. I just respect their right to do it. I do think Christians for the most part are treated here at DU like a DUer would be at "free repub".You don't agree w/ their ideas so you hate for them to be expressed. I would doubt any Christian on DU would attempt to "force" anything on anyone.
