5.  The Wind That Shakes the Barley
Ireland, 1920. Damien and Teddy are brothers. But while the latter is already the leader of a guerrilla squad fighting for the independence of his motherland, Damien, a medical graduate of University College, would rather further his training at the London hospital where he has found a place. However, shortly before his departure, he happens to witness atrocities committed by the ferocious Black and Tans and finally decides to join the resistance group led by Teddy. The two brothers fight side by side until a truce is signed. But peace is short-lived and when one faction of the freedom-fighters accepts a treaty with the British that is regarded as unfair by the other faction, a civil war ensues, pitting Irishmen against Irishmen, brothers against brothers, Teddy against Damien.... Kind of a dark, dreary movie with dark, dreary characters. Newman plays an alcoholic lawyer taking on the Catholic Church in a big case. The "Verdict" in the case is very uplifting.

43. Paring it down to a top five was hard
• October Sky
God damn, this movie is uplifting! Literally. A true story of a West Virginian coal miner's kid who was so inspired by Sputnik he starts building rockets of his own.

• Rob Roy
This revenge tale was overshadowed by Braveheart which was released the same year but I think it's far superior. It's not as epic in scale which allows for a much more intimate view of the characters. The sword fight at the end is the best I've ever seen.

• The People vs. Larry Flynt
This choice might be somewhat controversial but the supreme court decision in the end supporting free speech (allowing free satire of public figures, even Jerry Falwell) made me want to cheer. Really.

• Good Will Hunting
"I gotta see about a girl." 'Nuff said. I watched this recently and always thought the "it's not your fault" repeated twenty times was kind of stupid. But Will's breakthrough was being able to allow himself to honestly feel sad for himself without indulging in self pity. To see himself objectively and then move on.

• The Killing Fields
"Nothing to forgive, Sydney. Nothing." A rather depressing film but the reunion at the end is a great moment. If you want to really be depressed, research what happened to the actor who played Dith Pran.

48. VERY hard to find, but the 1995 "Les Miserables du Vingtieme Siecle"
It's on the "save" list at Netflix and can be ordered in Region 2 format from Amazon, but I saw it in a theater in Portland when it first came out. I'm amazed that it's not available on DVD yet, because the reviewers on Internet Movie Database all give it rave reviews.

Not to be confused with "Les Miz" or any of the other period pieces it's based on, it's about an illiterate truck driver in France, who befriends a Jewish couple and their daughter during the German occupation. As he drives them through the countryside hoping to take them to safety, they read to him from "Les Miserables," and parallels begin to emerge between the story of the four main characters and the plot of Victor Hugo's novel.

A highly original and moving film, with touches of humor. Look for the 1995 film that stars Jean-Paul Belmondo as the truck driver.

Three homeless people--an elderly alcoholic, a drag queen, and a runaway teenage girl--find an abandoned baby on Christmas Eve. A fine story and amazingly realistic and clever animation.

71. Rosewood.
That shocked my soul, and moved me to tears.
It's the story of a white woman who is having an affair on her husband, lies and tells him that a black man raped her. This prompts the vigilante idiots in town to go around killing every black person they see. Then they burn their own town to the ground. It is a true story of how a small group save most of the children in town. It is worth a look.

To Kill A Mockingbird is the greatest movie ever made. There is just something innocent about it, yet terribly poignant at the same time. I can't watch it enough.

99. Yes, even if you don't believe in heaven and the supernatural
that is such a great movie. Probably one of Robin Williams' best roles. :)

Groundhog Day! Lady Jane. These are three of my all-time favorites. I'd add "Barry Lyndon" but it isn't uplifting, just very beautiful and quite funny and sad. Plus it stars Ryan O'Neil as a young man, in a good role... you can't go wrong.

I'm sorry that you must go through the pain and turmoil that comes with a separation.

87. I wouldn't say "moved my soul,"
since I can't name a movie that did that, but a good comedy always takes my mind off of whatever's got me down at the moment.

Try Major League (you don't have to like baseball to like this movie) or Bruce Almighty.

100. A recent one: Himalaya
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Himalaya_(film)

And it isn't just a simple feel good movie, it is in the native langague of the Dolpo people but of course with subtitles and not difficult to follow. There is real human challenges and conflict and but also moments of accomplishment and hope and the ending while not 'Hollywood happy' by any means is very uplifting IMHO.

It is definitely become one of my favorite films (stories really).

106. It's On My Top 5 Movies Of All Time List

I'm a sucker for movies depicting characters whose lives evolve and change for the better, and there's never been a better cinematic depiction of that than "The Lives Of Others." Gives me goosebumps just thinking about it....
