Pippin kitten now has his very OWN kitten! (dialup warning)
So, my VERY energetic and naughty Pip has been driving Oberon and Puck NUTS with his incessant demands for play. Poor Puck has come to the end of her rope with him and throws a literal hissy fit every time he comes near her (I don't blame her; he gets so much enjoyment out of getting a rise out of her). So, it was time for a trip to the SPCA to find him a willing playmate.

The first kitten I found was EXTREMELY playful, but he looked exactly like a miniature version of my late kitty Miro, so I got a lump in my throat while I played with him and had to move on to others. there were plenty of little black kitties there. Having done pet rescue, I know that black dogs and cats get euthanized more than any other color, so I passed up the adorable silver tabbies, blues, orange kitties and bi colors and focused on all the little black kittens. A fluffy medium haired kitten pawed at me as I walk by his cage. I knew instantly that he was "the one"!

(It's really hard to photograph black cats)!

His expression when he first sees Oberon:

He loves a good belly rub!

When I got him home I discovered that he's really a "black smoke"; black on top, but silver on his undersides. He's three months old, soft as a bunny and a very cheerful. He LOVES to play, so it has only been two days and Pip and he are now inseparable!

Pip wears him out while showing him the joys of playing with a toy in the bath tub:

Just as he used to play, all by his lonesomes:

Now the little guy just needs a name! He's cuter than his photos. He sort of looks like a little fox or teddy bear with lanky legs.I think he'll be a very handsome (and big!) boy when he grows up. I like to go with literary or artist's names. All I've come up with so far are Atticus, Spartacus, Meriodoc, Cicero, Cervantes, Ansel, Matisse, Lucius, and Zephyr. Any other ideas?

1. I can't possibly be the first one to find a kitten thread!
What a sweetie pie you have there. For a "shelter" cat, he looks pretty comfortable and relaxed in his new home. I like Atticus myself - something just seems right about that. :)

Edited on Thu Sep-18-08 12:35 PM by Lorien
I thought about LotR names (Pippin's friend in that series is named Merry, but Merry doesn't suit him. Meriodoc, maybe...). I was trying to come up with another magical reference from Brit lit. Sirius Black came to mind, but he's a bit goofy, so he may never pull that one off, lol!

4. How cute!
I didn't know black critters got euthanized more often! Is that because of superstition?

Since his best buddy is Pippin, you really must name him Merry (Meriodic Brandybuck)! If you do, be prepared for more mischief because they are sure to live up to their names!

My little kitty looks like a medium hair-like my Turks. But who knows, his hair might get longer...just hard to tell at three months. His eyes could turn amber too-but they're green right now. Scorpio's hair was much shorter as a kitten too, though, wasn't it?

21. I don't think he was a kitten when I first got him though
and its hard to tell. He was so malnourished. It seems to me that seeing him before he was abandoned through the window he wasn't as long haired as he became later. And I certainly don't remember seeing the smokey fur.

My 86 year old mother brushes him every day to keep him pretty!

60. I've decided to go with "Atticus Pyewacket"
which sounds like a nutty George Lucas name, but it suits his oddly contrasting features; having a serious little face and a goofball personality!

Oh, the original Atticus was the best friend of the Roman orator and philosopher Cicero, who dedicated some of his works to him.

24. I always make extra effort to make friends with the black kittens and cats.
So that during Halloween I can keep them safe from neighborhood Republicans. I shit you not. Cats are not safe in red America, much less the poor cats with black hair. You'd think people would have evolved by now, but no. There are still hateful assed people who hate black cats and kittens. Glad you saved one. It always makes my heart lift to know there is real true decent humanity left in this God forsaken world where we live.

Ok, on to the ooooohhhing and aaaaaahiiing.

Aawwwwwwww, both your kitties are so cute. I love cats. I also collect baseballs from children in the neighborhood who are too afraid of me and my black hair to come in the yard and get them...I'm well on my way.

29. Yes, that is strange.
The area where we live is rather rural and the people still hold a lot of strange superstitions. One day at my first job out of high school, I overheard the boss' mother in law say I was untrustworthy because of the black hair and brown eyes. Most people in this area have brown or red hair. Those of us with the black hair are automatically outsiders. It's weird.

33. Yeah, I adopted a Bombay about 7 years ago....
...it was just before Thanksgiving, and there were so many black cats in the shelter, I really had a hard time deciding. I naively asked why, and was given the whole story about how bastard sociopaths adopt and torture them during Halloween, so there's a moritorium on black cat adoption for months before. After that, I had to take one home and give it nothing but love.

So her name is Miss Patty, because that's what she was called in the shelter. But the next black cat who comes into my life I'm thinking of calling Rory--for a Rorsharck ink blot pattern!

I call my cat the Black Hole, Auntie Matter, and Negative Space.

I like Maxfield (for Parrish) or Vladimir (for Nabokov, plus 'Vlad' is sinister enough sounding for a fierce black kitten).

Stewart is named for both Jon Stewart and Stewie Griffin, which pretty much fits his personality!

Edited on Fri Sep-19-08 03:41 AM by regnaD kciN
In the Basque region between France and Spain, black cats are considered good luck, and the luckiest of them all are "Matagots" (magic cats), who move in with you. Thirty years ago this fall, my ex and I had a grown-up version of your little one (except with yellow eyes) show up in the middle of a storm, meowing pitifully. (He was very sick, and the vet later said he wouldn't have survived much longer if we had turned him away.) Of course, we took him in and nursed him back to health, and, of course, we had to name him Matagot ("Matty," or "Mat-Cat" for short). He lived with me for another eight years, and became one of those legendary cats people still tell stories about decades later. Very sweet, calm, and dignified, but with a practical-joker streak a mile wide. May you be as lucky with your new arrival!

I used to hear hissing and growling outside my bedroom door every morning as Pippin relentlessly pounced on Oberon and Puck. Now all I hear is an occasional "urrrr, uurrrr, UUURRRR"! as the two kittens call to one another during their play. It's a MUCH more peaceful home now! I don't know how I'm going to afford all the food, litter, and flea treatments, but I'll manage somehow! I really don't know how DUer Tencats does it!

Gabby looks a lot like Sterling, a Persian that a DUer adopted from one of the rescue groups I worked with (he was one of my fosters), though Gabby has more silver in her coat. And that sure is a sweet photo of Lucy taking a nap! :loveya:

66. Catster is Awesome!
I'd have a houseful of cats if I could. Catster is really neat. They already have friends!

58. That's a great photo!
Bear is one handsome little guy. So glossy! He looks like he grew up into a pretty large kitty.

64. Beebie!
You can call that kitty a more formal name but they only seem to answer to an easy-to hear one! So--Beeebie! then you can formally name that kitty like Bee-elzebub or whatever...

All of my kitties answer to a shortened name, like Bone (for Bonjour,), Lampy (for Larry), Stella (the same), etc...they all answer to "stinky kitty"

65. Lol! I do that too

Puck remains Puck, but it's "Pip" for Pippin, "Obie" for Oberon, and now "Pye" for Atticus Pyewacket (what I've decided to call the kitten) or sometimes "smudge", because he's so darned hard to see! I also go the opposite way with names; Puck becomes "Puckus Minimus" (her Gladiator name) or "Puckus the Ruckus", a friend calls Oberon "Obi Ron Bon Jovi", and I call him "Sofa Lynx". Pippin also goes by "Peregrin Took" or "Peregrin Underfoot". So I started out with a long name for Atticus Pyewacket. I'm sure it will have MANY variations!

I've never had a smarter, more sensible, cuddly and beautiful cat than our black baby, Maximouse. Good luck to you!
