Sometimes I *HATE* people...a rant. Please bear with me.
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 09:39 AM by WillBowden
This morning I got home after a crappy night at work. Rude people. Cheap people. Stupid people.

I came home to a letter from Clare at the Northwoods Humane Society. It seems that Lady, the puppy that I liked so much, has been adopted. Good for her! Then I got to the part that just hurts so much:

And then we have Isabella, who was found hiding under someone's porch out in the woods. She was so afraid of people. She is coming around very slowly. We keep her in the office under the desk,
we just didn't have the heart to put her in a kennel. She just lays under the desk and doesn't make a peep. For the last 3 days Jodi has been taking her home with her to try to get her used
to seeing people and kids. She has been doing well. We believe someone has definitely beat her since she barely makes eye contact with you and she buries her head when your hands are moving.
She is also missing one front tooth and her canine tooth is damaged. What a pitiful little girl, but she is making progress. People should be punished for their actions!!!

I'm sorry to say this...people should be killed for their actions! HOW could you hurt a dog? What kind of miserable person would beat a dog enough to make her lose a tooth?

I'm thinking spaying and neutering your pets isn't enough. I think people who do these horrible things to animals (or children) should be spayed or neutered (preferably without anesthesia).

ON EDIT:
No matter how bad I thought my night was I can always be humbled by how someone else had an even worse night.

Rant over. For now.

2. Mean people suck.
When thinking of the overly mean...I try to think of rather hideous ways in which negative karma will visit them, and that makes me feel a bit better.

But, a part of me would like to open industrial-sized cans of whoop-ass on people who do these sorts of things.

7. Where are you located?
Perhaps we can find something. I don't know if she's up for adoption yet (and we're not near the shelter...it's about 300 miles away. We just help out when we can.)

12. Well, DU'ers...anyone have a suggestion on how to get a pup from MI to DE?
Edited on Thu Feb-26-04 09:43 AM by WillBowden
Please let me know.

This is, of course, assuming the shelter is adopting the pup out and will allow it.

As a dog lover myself I understand where you're coming from - it's criminal to harm those who are incapable of defending themselves.

6. I think people reach a point of no return
and then you've just gotta eliminate them. The behavior you describe is obscene, and in this case the victim was a dog. I've been involved in cases worse than this, with infants. Rehabilitation is a tool with limits, then you have to thin the herd. Fuckers.

Empathetic rant over as well.

Cruelty to animals is the ultimate of cowardly acts.

9. Our neighbors have two wonderful "found" dogs
One, a doberman mix, had obviously been abused (she flinched at every raised arm and you could see her ribs). Now, 18 months and lots of love later, she weigh's 54 lbs and is a totally loving sweetheart.

I love her nearly as much as I love my own. Thanks for caring.

11. First it's Animals, then it's people (non-rant)
I think folks that are caught doing this to animals should be punished of course. If they are mentally ill, they should be institutionalized until they are considered to no longer be a threat. If they are minors, they should be treated and their home life investigated for abuse. Violence to animals is a fairly good indicator of potential violence to people. Regardless of their mental health, I think they should be monitored for the rest of their lives as a very real danger to people, particularly the weak such as children and elderly.

13. Agreed
After all, I believe many serial killers "got their start" abusing animals. And don't forget that * used to blow up frogs for fun.

15. My heart aches, Will.
I come from a dog-loving family, and although I don't have any right now, (My wife doesn't like them) my brother and his girlfriend have become dedicated dog 'rescuers'. A couple of years ago, they took in an old Collie from the pound that had had an abusive first owner. Her leg was damaged, and she was very skittish. Well, my brother and his girlfriend lavished her with love and took sterling care of her, spending huge sums at the vet to nurse her back to health. The Collie, "Sweetie" is what they called her, died about six months ago, but it does my heart a world of good to know her last few years were happy and safe ones. I hope that helps a little.

17. I share your pain, but DU can handle this...
There are amazing people here and it warms my heart to see the response you have received to this post.

Just to remind you how powerful we are, check the update to the following thread. It's rather buried on page 4 right now. It's the story of the DU dog, Wellstone. GloriaSmith promises to post pictures early next week, as she has been sick.

I love this place!!!!

Thanks for working so hard for Isabella. She is lucky to have you around and I have complete confidence that she will end up in a wonderful place, just like Wellstone.

19. People suck, animals are better
I volunteer at our local shelter and could tell enough stories to make you really hate people. It is simply unbelievable what people do to animals until you think about what people do to other people.

20. animal abuse -- particularly of dogs -- is one of two things that . . .
sets my blood aboil (the other being child abuse) . . . I've had dogs all my life, and I believe with all my heart that they are God's gift to us crazy humans . . . funny, affectionate, intensely loyal and protective of their humans, it's from dogs that we learn what "unconditional love" really means . . . and any time some sub-human repays that innate quality with violence, my gut reaction is "shoot the motherfucker!" . . . no, of course I don't mean it, but that's how strongly I feel about these kinds of low-lifes . . . abusing animals and abusing young children are the two things in life that sometimes tempt me to re-think my opposition to the death penalty . . .
