The supposed "moral compass," Dave Marsh, is actually Springsteen's paid flunky. That's why there's so many books by him about the Boss.

I used to really respect Marsh; the early Rolling Stone Record Guide editions edited by him really made me want to be a rock critic at an early age...as Marsh got older, his parochialism seeped in, and struck him deaf to any rock music post-1984. Now all he's good for is trivia....

Joe Carducci's "Rock and the Pop Narcotic" features an incredible deconstruction of Marsh's ouvre.
