Can anyone reccomend a good bed-dog?
If, say, I were to get a bed dog for Tavernerscion - you know, one who would love sleeping in bed with the kid at night, what breed would you go with?

1. Maybe an American Mastiff?
I like mutts, but you can get one that has Mastiff genes. They don’t shed a lot, or drool too much. They love kiddies and are smart, loyal and protective. Sweet dogs in general. Big dogs, but big dogs are cool. http://www.dogbreedinfo.com/americanmastiff.htm

14. You are right about the temperment, gentle dogs
But, you are not quite right about the drool, the farts, and the "take up the whole bed" behavior of a Mastiff I know. I tried sleeping with him once and those big paws and his butt on the pillow next to my head were just too much. I recommend a pomeranian mutt. They love to cuddle!

2. Great dane, and you'll need a bigger bed.
I spent my entire childhood with a dane on my bed, and I'm currently doing so again.

Seriously though, you could just adopt almost any mutt at the shelter. Get them accustomed to sleeping on the bed, and they just will. Our rottie mix I found on the street sleeps on the bed, and the pit mix we found on the street sleeps on my roommate's bed.

3. Labs are easy to train and if you get a laid back one
getting him out of the bed will be a problem. Mine kicked me out of bed every night.. I now sleep with my pointer mix who sleeps at the foot of my bed.
Yeah...my Lab, Boo. weighs 100 pounds. My pointer mix weighs about 50. Get the picture. If you want your kid sleeping on the floor all by her(him)self get a big dog.. Then when the kid doesn't want the dog on the bed... it can sleep with you... That is why until Boo became too crippled to jump on my bed I had a 100 pound labralanche sleeping the beginning of the night with me then I slept cold and alone for the rest.

4. Dachshunds - Best Snugglers!!
I have two and I wake up in a Wienie Dog Sandwich every morning. One on each side of me :). They are burrowers and like to be under the covers curled up at your tummy or behind your knees.

17. Definitely weiner dogs!
Mine slept with me until I went off to college.

He rode around in the saddle-baskets on my bicycle, and walked everywhere I went when I wasn't riding.

5. Any dog will do
They all love to sleep on the bed with you. I've had Collies, Australian Shepherd, Lab-Chow mix, Rat Terror and assorted mutts. There wasn't a one of them I didn't have to tell to move over so that I could get on my bed.

6. Most dogs would love to sleep in a bed.
Whether they'll make room for the kid is another matter.

There always seem to be a few looking for good homes on petfinder.

15. Go for a beagle (a female one). That's a People Puppy without equal. Our beagle
slept with Mrs R and me when she was very young, but switched over to sleeping with the Little Guy at about six months and has done so EVERY night since.

16. How old is the scion?
I'm not a fan of big dogs for little children. I had a big boxer and I would not trust him around a small child. He would never bite but he was so big, he could knock over a child just by bumping it accidently.
I think a small child would be better off with a small dog that the child could hug and hold.
Of course, if your child is older, ignore what I said.

21. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
They are the cuddliest! I think they were originally bred to be a lady's companion pup. Alas, however, they tend to have health problems, or I would have a couple of them.

22. Boston Terriers.
I've had three, and every one of them was a bed snuggler. My current dog, Maggie, won't sleep in the bed unless she's under the covers--she's a great bedwarmer when it's cold! She has to do the snuggling, not you, but she loves to sleep right up against you. She's also learned to pull her head out from underneath the bedding if she gets too hot.

But you could say I'm a tad bit biased . . . .

27. The beagle sleeps under the covers with me.
Spends a little while looking out her window while I read. But when I turn out the light, she comes and nudges her way under the covers. My first beag, Spartacus, did, too. Lucie, my cocker, slept in a corner in the bedroom, but didn't come to bed.

29. Don't get a springer or a cattle dog
Edited on Sat Sep-13-08 01:12 AM by XemaSab
The springer likes to be on the bed, but he gets really hot, so he spends the whole night jumping on and off the bed.

The cattle dog hogs the bed, and you'll gradually find yourself occupying about a foot at the VERY edge of the bed, with her trying to push you over even more. :o

Possibly one of the most loyal, loving breeds I've ever encountered. Smart enough to be interesting, but not so smart that they mess with you too bad. :-)

36. Our Doberman/Great Dane is a great bed dog,
except when he runs in his sleep, he whakes the whole bed and wakes us up.
He is a great cuddler in the winter and will keep anyone warm (dogs temp is 103-104 degrees)

Go to a local shelter, and tell them your bed dog needs - they will recommend several, I'm sure.
